Debt Free

It's a good opportunity to pay off debt, if you have any.

Yep, paying off my debt (except mortgage, which is affordable and only 15-year term) has been the most liberating thing I've done. Learning to live below my means was difficult (still is), but absolutely worth it.

Pay off your debts instead

The general /r/personalfinance plan is:

- Pay off your debt, then

- 3-6 months of savings, liquid, then

- Buy whatever you want

I'm saying this given that I definitely don't have 3-6 months of savings liquid (yet) though I have paid off all of my debt. Getting rid of debt is incredibly freeing in and of itself.

It makes paying back debt easier, doesn't it?

get out of debt as soon as you can.

Paying off debt is always better than investing the money. Nothing beats being debt free.

You can do all of those without incurring crippling debt.

I am debt free. Paid cash for my house. Don't own a credit card. I think technically my wife has one.

There are a lot of ways I could make more money. I have enough money as it is, so what's the point? The rest of my money is in stocks, etc. I make enough of a return on it.

Basically, being debt-free gives me peace of mind that is worth whatever marginal return I may be getting otherwise.

Debt is the killer. Pay off all consumer debt as a first step to financial freedom.

1) You have a free source of money, so you can pay off all your debts with time

2) You will probably always have someone by the balls

Also paying off debt.

We pay off our debt constantly.

Congratulations, you are a better human being than those who remain in debt. Now what?

By your logic literally everything is free, since you can borrow cash and pay for it with cash and default on the debt.

Nobody likes to be in debt, the sooner you can get rid of it, the better.

Savings allow you freedom from having to earn money, the opposite of debt.

For example, you can temporarily "retire" for a few years and do what you want without pressure. Either directly or indirectly, I think having debt limits you to the path & earnings you've "forecasted" - the opposite of freedom.

At least that's the case for me.
