The truth was, the company ... didn’t need him anymore.

He doesn't work for them anymore.

Which company did he leave?

He left the company a long time ago. And he probably had his reasons.

He left the company earlier this year.

He was ousted from his own company. Might be as simple as him just wanting to move on.

The circumstances of his departure were more akin to a break-up than a passing of the baton. No point in holding onto to the stock and mentally tying yourself to an organization that shunned you. Steve Jobs did the same thing if I recall correctly.

His business stops and someone else fills the void left by the company.

He left the company last year.

He probably left because he learned that the project was going to be killed. Sad he didn't share that news with the rest of the team so you could all be hunting for a job while on the corporate payroll just like he did.

tl;dr - feeling no ownership doing somebody else's big projects, he quit.

Exec has closed shop.

Maybe he was to busy being kicked out of the company... /s

He left the company - he failed the condition. Once you leave a company, all your contacts are ended.

So instead of fixing things, he walked away? I mean I get it if he was an employee but a co-founder and a board member?

> It seemed like maybe Eric Schmidt's departure had something to do with it, though it's possible that was just coincidence.

Another option is that he saw the trajectory of the company culture and wanted out.

Sadly that interview didn't reveal that much, only that he left not by choice, and "still hurts him".

The only somewhat objective info about it was that he didn't have a defined role in the company anymore.

He got replaced by the CTO though.

Officially, he left because the board shot down his plans for a new office. Like, right after the board told him no, he said "well, I quit then".

Unofficially, he was burned out, and he used that as his excuse to quit.

(the new office was probably why he wanted everyone to relocate to SF, so everyone could come work at this huge new office he wanted for the team)

He doesn't work there anymore, there is a difference, he was a co-founder and present until he ~~self-destructed~~ left in 2020.
