You could also physically remove the SIM card, but there's a practical problem there; people with SIMs usually want to use them.

No, it won't help to remove the SIM card. Unless you've removed the battery from your phone, then you can be tracked. And there's no such thing as "can't ditch my phone."

The worse part is requiring a SIM card on the phone the whole time, hoovering your IMEI and phone number in the process.
