That is no match for the general population's apathy. Seriously, "you can lead a horse to water" applies pretty strongly here.

Weird to assume that when we don't even know which country it is. I don't find blanket cynicism in favor of apathy to be useful.

I am wondering why the world still does not seem to care about it.

Let me flip that question around and ask, what difference would it make? What can you as an individual do, that you are not already doing, when the totalitarian government of the most populous nation on Earth is determined to downplay it?

It’s not indifference, it’s resignation.

It was barely debated. We can't even get half the country to care about a disaster that's unfolding in their faces.

The sad thing is, no one cares. There hasnt even been a public debate about a government with 80% majority.

"No country is going to do what it takes"

That's not being realistic. That is decidedly pessimistic and something that no one could say at this time.

Also, a political environment that regularly denies people doesn't help!

So far it doesn't appear anyone is brave enough to make a stance.

It doesn't seem to me that local populations or organizations have much say in the matter.

even the most liberal parts of US will not go anywhere near doing such thing. As the name might suggest, I live in such area and the attitude towards such things will not get any backing anywhere (government or private businesses)

It would seem politicians, especially in the West do not care at all about that concern.

Seems like a massive failure to take what so many places are so envious of and not be able to make something positive with it.

This simple point seems lost to 95% of the population. I guess the media portrayals don’t help either.

They haven't been rallying in support of it either.

There is no we on stuff like that, just vocal minorities and an apathetic majority.

To be fair, not meeting any of its ambitions is probably one of the biggest flags popping up...

I fail to see how this will be a win for "the public".

strange that the locals don't benefit at all

Exactly. Even the global media could put enough pressure on really, but I don't see evidence of them being 'interested.'

No. Main stream interest just isn't there.
