The same reason why many Jews have left Malmö in Sweden [1] by now: the rise of anti-Semitism which goes hand in hand with the rise of Islam as a power factor in these places.
Except that the immigrants there are not starting businesses. They do not integrate and instead are a drain on social services. Sweden's immigration policy with regards to refugees has been far too liberal, and now they have problem ghettos in Stockholm and Malmo.
There is a real trojan horse here. In the last two decades the Arab population has swelled to over 600,000. They hive the highest birth rate of any other group. They live in neighborhoods where police all but refuse to go. Fiercely anti-semitic, some attack the Jewish community in Malmo--to the point where Jews are leaving.
The've let in a population of people that has no interest in learning the language, integrating, or adopting local customs. The next decade will be interesting to see how this is handled.
Wow, is this Malmö you talk about? And only last year?
You must be working for the Swedish Pravda State News aka SVT.
Copenhagen banned begging so they all came the to Sweden. I have no opinon on this.
Malmö as a city is supported by other cities. Malmö itself is in deep debt and not self sustainable. It's not going to make if you ask me. This is why I don't invest in OMX now.
Also, major homophobia and anti-semitism, but maybe that falls under "colourful".
The situation is terrible. From what I’ve understood from reading the news past year is that the police has lost control over Malmö (Sweden’s third largest city that got hit with the most immigrant applications) to organised criminals and the inhabitants who can afford it are moving away quickly.
The right-wing party Sverigedemokraterna is hence growing stronger while the current ruling socialist party Socialdemokraterna is losing voters inversely as a result.
I will personally never forgive Sweden and the people in charge betraying innocent lives abroad
The people just as betrayed or more so by the people making these decisions are these people's fellow Swedish countrymen. What these governments and people pushing this agenda of what I assume they believe is big-heartedness or something, but with a willful blindness to the consequences have done is just ghastly and absurd.
There are frequent bombings in Malmö, often directed at Jews.
The bombings appear to be spreading, just last month apparently, there was a blast in Billesholm in northern Skåne. https://themuslimissue.wordpress.com/2015/08/01/sweden-musli...
I'm fairly certain these things didn't occur say 30 years ago, much less frequently.
Then also in the past 30 years, Sweden has skyrocketed up the charts to lead the world in rape and school arson attacks.
Sweden has accepted more muslim immigrants than most countries in Europe, and there are a lot of Swedes who aren't happy about it. There was an incident last year where a gang ran through the Stockholm train station randomly beating immigrants. I haven't been there for a couple years, but things sound pretty tense.
How exactly could Sweden or any other country destroy Islam by having a minute fraction of its population migrate there? What percentage of Islamic people in the world are actively being ‘oppressed’ in countries they voluntarily fled to? The key word here is voluntarily.
What you’re seeing, the watering-down of Islam, also happens to Christianity and all other religions in Western countries. It’s what happens when there’s a bazaar, rather than a monoculture. Your sentiment is correct, if not slightly unhinged. But there is nobody out to get you, no more than everybody is out to get everybody else. It’s not all a big plot.
In my opinion, refugee intake in Sweden has been more about Swedish white guilt (for whatever reason) and thus self-destruction.
I'd like to think there is sarcasm in this, but since you forgot to end it /sarcasm, I'll bite....
- Bombings and grenades this summer - https://www.rt.com/news/310757-sweden-malmo-blasts-crime/
- A long history of Anti-semitism (not unique to Sweden)
- Anti-Muslim hate-crime (again, not unique to Sweden)
- Anti-Roma (Gypsy) hate-crime - (again...you get the point)
Malmö is one of the many powder kegs across Europe. You have entire neighborhoods where Fire, emergency, and law enforcement will not go ("no-go zones") [1]
Sweden is not perfect. Malmo is no perfect. No place is perfect. To say so is a lie, or you have your head in the sand.
Let me expand on that... Just two simple data points:
1. Malmö, with large immigrant population, have a population of around 300,000 -- and half the number of murders this year as the whole of Norway, with 15 times the population. (Norway is culturally very similar to Sweden. Well, unless you ask Norwegians. :-) )
2. in the last 20 years there have been a negligible building of housing, for political reasons. At the same time, the Swedish population have increased with 10+% -- also for political reasons! This created a really high risk for a housing bubble in the next economic downturn.
In short -- there are scary problems.
Those problems are much larger than Germany's problems with immigration -- and are pushed under the carpet extensively by the Swedish media. Hence, you see two Swedes with totally different views of the Swedish situation.
The internal Swedish discussion is insanely polarized. The largest newspaper have for years stamped people nazi and fascist for arguing to implement a migration policy used in most of the rest of the EU. Norway and Denmark have been attacked for being "brown" (as in SA), despite being a couple of the world's most liberal and tolerant countries. And so on.
Finally, the point:
The Swedish general media have been systematically misrepresenting facts to the public. (For instance, up until a year ago, it was a "fact" that immigration of largely uneducated people was a good business and gave a good economical result for the country, despite an expensive welfare state.) What is really the fake news in Sweden..?
(You might argue that media lie and spin everywhere. Probably true. But in democracies, the news don't generally all use exactly the same spin...)
Please excuse me as I womit in my mouth. All right, done. Sorry for the stench everyone, but racism has a bad effect on my stomach.
Multi-culti has been part of Sweden for a Long Time. Immigrants one of the big reasons why Sweden prospered in the 1900's. Turks, Italians and Finns are some of the places where large amounts of immigrants have come, and they've been employed by Swedish companies exporting everything from building material, textile, mining, cars. The list is long.
Do you know how many people who aren't immigrants (or 2nd or 3rd generation)? ~7 million. That is less than NYC, in a whole country. We need all extra labour we can get.
But theese things arent the least important. They really doesnt matter at all.
There are two big reasons why people immigrate (here, at least): shelter from violence or opression and the hope of affording a decent life.
To reject anyone coming from war who wants to live in peace would be the most inhumane thing to do. Ever. In war-ridden countries, you always live with the risk of you and your family being killed.
And to reject someone who wants to earn enough to live a decent life? And who has the balls to move to a new country to make that dream come true?
Immigration and multi-culturalism has brought so many great things to Sweden, and I am proud that my country let's many into it's borders.
Not to mention that Sweden is having issues with it's high rate of immigration: increased crime in areas with concentrations of immigrants specifically.
You ignored my single point in the short GP comment.
I wrote: "39% of the Muslim immigrants support antisemitism in a poll because the Swedes are Nazis and taught them?!"
You didn't retract that, you just wrote lots of other text (and attacked Sweden of 65+ years ago!)
that it is just bad propaganda and/or trolling. That stupidity was enough, I have nothing more to say to you, troll.
(As I wrote, it would be fun to copy/paste statistics from other countries to see more of your conspiracy theories -- since you ignore references if I don't copy/paste the content -- but it is enough.)
Good for him - then what most people say abpit And Biskopsgården/Hammarkullen/Angered or Rosengård or Rinkeby/Sundbyberg must be wrong too.
I left Europe. I was initialy from the french city where the jihadist killer short jewish schoolchildren - along with their professor. My mom still lives there. She was attacked twice these last 2 years.
Europe is full of hate and hatred - no wonder why guns are outlawed. It keeps some balance.
I pray and hope I will never ever again have to live there - ever.
What is it about Sweden that makes people like cherry-picking facts from it? There's a whole right-wing conspiracy meme about muslim no-go areas that doesn't match the reality observed by Swedes.
Similarly, Sweden didn't have no restrictions in response to coronavirus.
It's largely the result of an ideological deadlock, where legitimate logistical concerns about immigration and integration were lumped up with islamophobia and racism. Immigration was also seen as desirable in order to address the demographic crisis and low birth rates.
This in turn had the ironic side-effect of cementing a sort of structural racism where all these immigrants showed up and were given at best estate housing and a welfare check with very limited prospects for the same sort of quality of life as the natives.
Turns out very few people want to lead a shitty life doing menial jobs as a second class citizen. Isn't that weird?
Turns out if you give kids the career options of cleaning toilets or takeaway delivery (both for a pittance), a life of crime starts to look real appealing. Heck, it's a real testament to the humanity of these people that Sweden doesn't have more criminals than it already does.
It's because the local politics are rather intense in Sweden right now. The whole country is rather emotional at the moment, has been for the last couple of days.
For a while now the racist parts of the population has been rather outspoken. I guess feeling that their opinions has finally been legitimized with a far-right party winning seats in parliament and all that.
At the same time the rest of the population has been rather quiet. I guess not knowing exactly what to make of it. No one seems to have been prepared for it. After all, the official, and somewhat internalized, image of Swedish culture and identity has been that those opinions had no place in civilized society, and thus shouldn't be dignified with actual response.
The last few days, the refugee situation seems to have been a rallying point around taking back this identity. Resulting in a few days with more then usual activity of emotional manifestations.
That said, I was rather surprised to have to witness this on HN and must say I feel rather ashamed my self.
On behalf of Sweden: I'm sorry you had to witness that.
Edit: Down vote? Guess I should expect that for letting my own opinions on the matter shine through. But really, I was just trying to provide some context for interpreting the other posts in this thread.
This whole issue appears to be virtually unknown outside Scandinavian circles - and to some degree inside Sweden, whose print and broadcast media are to all intents and purposes heavily censored.
I had a Swedish girlfriend for a while. She moved to Denmark, where I live. And within a month changed her entire outlook on the demographics of her native land.
It is actually getting serious. Artists are jailed for their work in Sweden these days. Malmø is going out of control. The country is in a downward spiral of violence and chaos, and in deep, deep denial.
The merest mention of these issues automatically trigger the full brunt of rightist extremism accusations. And a predictable loss of karma points.
"...bat-shit crazy with (islamic) blasphemy laws, insane migration and allowing Jihadis into the government"
This says a lot about why you dislike the immigration-friendly Sweden of today. I have no desire to engage in a debate with a racist. I hope that the people on HN sharing your views will remain few.
