Sorry, none of us could figure out how to escape the asterisks, how'd you do it? Feel like I'm trying to triforce here.

Edit: I had a guess about how to escape asterisks here, and it didn't work!

I'm confused, why do you have to escape an asterisk?

btw, how did you escape that asterisk in quotes?

AFAIK there's no way to escape asterisks on HN. Backslashes certainly don't work. :(

You can escape asterisks on HN with \.

I just preceded the asterisks with a backslash.

Use asterisks instead :)

I second this, I can't find any way to display an asterisk.

Just don't ask me how to get a literal asterisk in there.

> EDIT: How do you type asterisks here? Escaping with a backslash doesn't work, nor does using three in a row

You can't, if you want to use more than one in the same comment. A workaround is to use a similar glyph such as UNICODE SMALL ASTERISK ?.

I tried the HTML code for asterisk before 'nix': * but it seems it doesn't process them. Too bad, might be a bug.

I just see asterisks?

Ah, thanks. That was probably the issue, because some of my asterisks worked but others didn't. I'll keep it in mind for the future.

Wow, forgot about the \asterisk being a reserved character.

I did not know you could backslash-escape asterisks (TIL! thanks!), so I prepended it with 4 spaces to make a code block.

At least use a backslash... escape the asterisk and you get sh*t not sht sht.

oh, bother, I forgot what HN does to asterisks. In what I wrote above, look for the bit in italics and mentally insert asterisks on each side of it. It was right when I typed it in, I promise...

I’ve had luck with not putting something directly after the asterisk.

I think he’s trying to escape the asterisk but doesn’t realize that’s not required as long as there isn’t another one following it.
