I did, too, and loved it as a kid. They'll never
officially" release Moroder's version on DVD, but there are other sources... http://www.morodermetropolisdvd.com/
For anyone into music and art, just recently I have seen
"B-Movie: Lust & Sound in West-Berlin 1979-1989" (2015) https://www.imdb.com/title/tt4291066/ and I can't get the soundtrack out of my head. Genius edit on tons of rare video material!
Make sure you have English subtitles just for a few scenes if you don't understand German.
Watch the full Director's cut, in German (not dubbed, with subtitles in your language as necessary). The original (USA) theatrical release dropped a lot.
It's okay. :) They were known only in niche film circles because there was hardly a good print, restoration, or subtitled-version available for decades.
Never heard of this movie but it says clearly on the German Wikipedia page:
> In Deutschland wurde der Film zunächst in einer stark gekürzten Fassung gezeigt, in der sämtliche Bezüge auf den Nationalsozialismus fehlten und der Film mit der Hochzeit Marias endet und nicht – wie in der Originalfassung – mit der Flucht der Trapp-Familie aus Österreich.
[eng]:
> In Germany, the film was initially shown in a heavily edited version, in which all references to National Socialism were removed and the film ends with Maria's wedding, and not—as in the original version—with the Trapp family's escape from Austria.
LOL, sounds even more scary than the Chinese version of Fight Club!
Yeah, it was screened with a live orchestra and broadcast on German TV in February - there are some rips around, although the intertitles are all in German.
