Go ahead! I'm in the USA, where libel isn't illegal and is difficult to show even in civil cases (unlike say the UK). But what you just said was horribly unfactual, so there isn't much to worry about (you have to show what you said was actually true in any case). I mean, if you tell your attorney, I'm sure he will have a good laugh at you (after he takes your money of course!).

Obviously you are trolling.

I suggest being careful with UK libel laws here. I am not a lawyer.

In the UK, I'm fairly sure this would be considered libel.

Could this be considered libel?

Not a lawyer, but this sure seems like libel.

This is a great way to encourage a libel lawsuit. Even if everything you say is absolutely true, you'll still need to have lots of money to defend yourself in court. Someone who has millions of dollars can afford more lawyer hours than you can, so you may end up broke.

My advice: just move on with your life. Constantly dwelling on the past is holding you back. You've learned the lesson that some people are assholes, which can be valuable to you in the future if helps you avoid a similar situation.

This would be libel

Libel is a false statement. Therefore not libel. However they could sue you for "libel" and then you'd lose because they had a bigger budget for lawyers fees.

Can you sue them for libel then?

Would this be covered under libel?

Libel?

No it is not illegal. Defamation, even if it exists, which in this case looks pretty doubtful, is a civil tort.

You can sue for libel in US as well as in Europe.

UK libel laws aren't that bad for situations like this — if he were sued in the UK, he could rely on the defence of honest opinion and I imagine he would prevail.

How does this not constitute libel? I'm not a lawyer, so the question is in earnest.

If it's factually correct it wouldn't be libel.

I wouldn't be surprised if it's illegal somewhere in the world, but in the US, publishing factual information you have not signed away the right to publish via an NDA or similar contract is usually legal. I don't know that motive is ever involved as part of the test of determining whether or not you are allowed to write something.

I'm not a lawyer, this isn't legal advice.

Haha, I don't think you know what libel is.

In some countries that would be Libel.

Libel is illegal and in the same category.

not in the UK. Over here it can still be libel even if true(!)
