Jeff Meyerson's 2015 interview with Quincy Larson of Free Code Camp provides a good overview of the project.

Hi Hacker News friends,

Last year, the open source community that I run, Free Code Camp, did a big live stream. This was a fun way for us to connect with people who were learning to code and answer a bunch of their questions.

This year, we're doing it again, and we've have some awesome guests:

Jeff Atwood - creator of Stack Overflow

Kyle Simpson - author of You Don't Know JS

Anil Dash - a late 90's developer and blogger who's now CEO of Fog Creek Software (GoMix which used to be HyperDev)

And a ton of other guests.

The full schedule and guest list is here: https://www.freecodecamp.com/open2017

We also have a YouTube chatroom and a hashtag: #Open2017

I hope to see you there! :)

What would be the problem of this? Are there any issues with Coder Camps?

Here's their new location: https://www.freecodecamp.org/news/

Good for them, I hope more will join the exodus.

I think Freecodecamp just has a very active and large community that generally shares/upvotes things.

Perhaps some sort of code-camp.

Have you heard of Summer of Code?

I agree with the last point 100%. It seems that this Coder Camps company has experience running different programs in full stack development and data science, so I imagine they know what they're doing.

I went to a code retreat back in July. It was a great experience, and I would highly recommend it. You can read about my experience at http://johnpwood.net/2011/07/29/what-i-learned-by-attending-...

He's talked about systems for sharing code so that non-programmers can find code that does what they want without actually needing to dive in. Not sure how well this will work out.

Haven't had a chance to play with it yet but clicked around and it looks interesting. I like the idea of users posting their own coding challenges. The one thing I noticed this suffers from is a lack of a community base. Just clicking through the challenges on the front page I saw no discussions. But with that said I think this could be a neat application for new programmers. I know someone who is going through freecodecamp now. I'll ask them to take a look at this and see what they think.

Question for Steve: How did Summer of Code go? I understand you mentored a student who developed for Hackety Hack a few summers ago?

By the way, I'd love to contribute to Hackety Hack :)

That's probably the coolest coding project I've heard about in years. Please do share.

Yeah, it's going to be awesome when we can do this: https://github.com/codecombat/codecombat/wiki/Summer-Project...

It'll be hard, but not as hard as what we've already done with sandboxing and live-coding user programs, and it'll be truly epic.

As a user of freecodecamp, this is a nice new year gift.

Certified Code Doctor from Code Camp!

This is like google summer of code.
