That story doesn't reflect too well on Musk either.

Based on the rest of the article, I get the feeling Thiel is trolling because he can, and I wouldn't take his stories at face value: that said, making up stories involving other people isn't usually advisable. It may very well be exaggerated, though?

Edit: I didn't know the story had been mentioned previously, I take back my skepticism regarding that.

It's a true story, and both Thiel and Musk have been saying it the same way for over 15 years. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mOI8GWoMF4M

Musk says lots of nonsense. I wouldn't believe him just because he says something.

I mean, it wouldn't surprise me if that's true, but it's pretty risky just taking Musk's word for it.

so musk was trolled?

If you're not following Musk every day, and maybe just know he's the Tesla/rocket guy, why wouldn't you take him seriously?

Somehow, this sounds like shifting blame from the liar to others ...

It's just trolling. Musk knows people will write about it (positive, negative, whatever).

Yep. The story as Musk tells it, and as goes viral every couple of months, is a lie.

It does sound pretty bad, doesn't it? The guy certainly seems to have a problem with telling the truth. I think it's crazy to compare him to Musk, since Musk is actually extremely smart and knowledgeable about multiple areas of engineering. This other guy is just parotting the same lines, like "we are an advanced energy company that just happens to sell cars!". It's like the cargo-cult version of Tesla without any interesting technology or innovation. All that being said, I hope the author of this write-up has a good lawyer!

Musk has said a lot of things that didn't ring true.

Was there something reported about Musk recently that wasn't true? Seems like the more extreme the story, the more likely it is to be true.

Musk: "[Author of story] never actually ran this story by me or my assistant. It is total nonsense." - http://www.businessinsider.com/elon-musk-responds-assistant-...

Musk is known to be dishonest, but something tells me the person making this claim is an ideological opponent of Musk. I would hesitate to believe this until more information.

According to others, that story is severely embellished:

To me, Musk comes across as an out-of-touch engineer who keeps trying to argue the technical case and insists it's the customer's fault.

I interpreted the blog post very differently. He says that the article is an outright premeditated lie, and presents an overwhelming amount of technical data to back up his claim.

There's also an entire clickbait industry built around Musk hate. I'd look into their story before believing them / the headline on face value.

But this hasn't happened, it's the opinion of this person who wrote the article. That doesn't vindicate Musk

Ok. I understand better.

The contention is that Musk told a tall, entertaining tale that was untrue. Fair.

But also that the tale indicates something dark about Musk's character? That seems a stretch.

This seems like it's probably not real, but it's very telling that I'm not 100% sure.

It's unimaginable that any other company would do this, but a Musk company? Hard to say. His sense of humor is certainly not... universal.

As much as I hate Musk and want this story to be true, it smells awfully fishy to me. It's all based on a story told by a single unverifiable source to Platformer, not exactly the pinnacle of journalistic integrity. It could easily be a yarn spun by somebody who read Musk's tweets and invented a emperor's new clothes story around it. Or even somebody who does work at Twitter and exaggerated the situation.

I'm about as far from a Musk fan as it is possible to be, but this is so clearly a joke that it take a real effort to read some kind of evil intent into it (beyond Musk's normal "I'm trolling on Twitter" annoying nature).

But I've seen people claim this before - I'm curious if there is a source this keeps coming from?
