Just give a zip code from that state.

State + zip? Example: CT06101

ZIP is inclusive of state

I guess my point is, the ZIP code should be a pretty good indication of the state that the person resides in. No, it is not perfect, but I think it lends itself to be somethng that can help with the OPs concerns.

Zip codes are nation-scoped, not state-scoped, so yes they'd know which state.

That will be useful for narrowing down the states, but it doesn't actually convert zip code to state.

It just converts first digit of zip code to list of states to which it could apply.

Zipcode plus address is usually plenty though. And it's certainly good enough to obviate the tedious selection of the state from a 52-item dropdown menu.

Zip code is usually a better way if it's relevant - you can fill in the state/town automatically.

Obviously, there are situations where that would not apply.

It's easy especially if they know the zip code.

^list of zip codes that map to more than one U.S. state

I've tried just asking for zip instead of city and state but then watch people as they type their city and state into the address line. Also theoretically people may mistype their zip and you'll have no way to validate it against what they typed in the city/state. The best is the auto-fill from some list of all valid addresses I'd say.

You can always move to another zip code.

You could typically type in a city name and that would give you a good enough idea. I guess that could be, but I've never had anyone ask me for my zip code for that.

Zip code depending of course.

Every single time I wonder, why not ask me for zip first then lookup city and state if possible.

You have to enter a zipcode, sorry that's not clear.

And zip codes.
