Sorry, I didn't notice this. I was talking about the comment thread in the external website. I didn't specify because at the time the sleeper nazi accounts hadn't yet activated here.
> recommendation algorithm started showing me neo-Nazi posts
Really? That seems... unlikely. Is it possible that your bar for “Nazi” is screwed to include things someone right of center would think are just normal values? Because I’m guessing you saw BUILD THAT WALL posts and AR-15 Competition pictures and not swasticas and lynched black men.
The rest of the world hasn't really moved on. By the way, new account, creeping nazi apologism, oblique (but not really) references to the jews... do you people have some kind of bot warning you of certain keywords being used?
"Has a lot of nazis"?? Do you have proof of this? (I mean I don't doubt that there is someone who does since the site has a pretty big user base and doesn't censor speech, let alone speakers for opinions but...)
I think the other replies are correct, and this is nothing to be alarmed about. But I don't think you should be downvoted just for asking. Nazis are using new dogwhistles all the time, and infiltrating forums like HN. I don't blame you for having your guard up.
It's not the equivalent of being a nazi and I don't think anyone's perception was "We have to ban these literally goose stepping nazi's from our reddit website"
The just saw exactly what you described. Edgy trolls posting nazi stuff.
I never once in my life imagined that one of the first comments on a front-page HN post would be one that claimed that refusing service to Nazis was "spurious" and "bigoted" and that said comment was not flagged-to-oblivion.
For anyone reading this thread, please know that this is NOT the majority opinion within the tech industry - not by a long shot. We are not Nazi sympathizers, and we do not think this is normal. It's not normal.
A. I wasn’t the one who broached the topic of nazis
B. This is a comment page about censorship and this thread in particular is about one party trying to end open society
So nazis are a natural comparison, and the valid comparison was attempted to be censored and avoided by bringing up an internet meme in exactly the way the originator has criticized. But hey knowing the meme is a get out of jail free card, no civil discourse needed!
Just admit that the comment would have been a valid defense of the nazi party in its ramp up. No meme-ing out of that and there’s been no attempt to deny it, just distract from it.
Your comment actually is a perfect example of why this anonymity is needed.
I read the article, I thought it was an interesting idea. On the other hand, you (presumably) read the article, came to the conclusion that Nazis must be behind it, and have now voiced your concern that it's a Nazi scheme publicly on the internet for everyone to see. Some people prefer not to have such accusations thrown at them for merely suggesting innocuous not-politically-motivated things.
Would you please stop posting inflammatory, unsubstantive comments? Nitpicking plus Nazis equals particularly pointless.
Edit: you've been posting a lot of flamewar comments lately (e.g. https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=18620146), and we've already asked you not to. If you keep doing it, we're going to ban your account.
