I don't understand the attitude about donations. The developer wrote an awe-inspiring work of art and has been giving it away without demand for years. He asks for donations with clear set goals of what they go toward for improving the software. Take it or leave it.
Yes, an open-source version would be valuable and I invite anyone here to start one.
Those projects aren't donation-based. They are open core (they have an upgraded version that builds upon the open source version, adding desired value that is worth paying for)
I'm in agreement with you. Like one or the other, not the switch over.
I rather the approach be that if it is an open source project, that they ask for donations. It is possible to succeed in that way, though it requires learning how to pull it off, where they also get corporate sponsors and donations.
Unpopular opinion but I mostly donate to charities that are confirmed to spend the money on more than administrative people. Open source donations I make for software I use. If an open source thing comes around that can replace my Samsung phone I'd buy in a heartbeat.
There are so many smaller open source projects I would love to donate to but don't accept donations. I would even pay subscription to them if it ensures their continued development.
Hello, I would like to support open source, but I also want to get my moneys worth (donate to someone who can produce the most value for it). I was thinking of putting up bounties for certain features and bug fixes, but that is time-consuming. What you might say is that I should donate to projects I'm using, but they have roadmaps with features I'm not interested in.
