Open-source first, donations second.

No, people should donate more to open source projects.

Damn. This really encourages me to start donating to open source projects.

Yeah it has to be open source. Accept donations in bitcoins.

I like the "donate to an opensource project" thing :)

I don't understand the attitude about donations. The developer wrote an awe-inspiring work of art and has been giving it away without demand for years. He asks for donations with clear set goals of what they go toward for improving the software. Take it or leave it.

Yes, an open-source version would be valuable and I invite anyone here to start one.

Donate. That's how we support the open source projects we depend on!

an open source project that takes donations/patrons can also do that though.

Supporting open source is not charity.

Those projects aren't donation-based. They are open core (they have an upgraded version that builds upon the open source version, adding desired value that is worth paying for)

I wish you the best. I don't think "not-fully" open source would make a difference in terms of donations. Have you looked at setting up a Patreon?

We do direct donations to open source projects through OpenCollective, GitHub Sponsors, and more. Sorry that wasn't more clear!

I'm in agreement with you. Like one or the other, not the switch over.

I rather the approach be that if it is an open source project, that they ask for donations. It is possible to succeed in that way, though it requires learning how to pull it off, where they also get corporate sponsors and donations.

yes, if you can't donate money consider in other ways, it's an open source project.

Unpopular opinion but I mostly donate to charities that are confirmed to spend the money on more than administrative people. Open source donations I make for software I use. If an open source thing comes around that can replace my Samsung phone I'd buy in a heartbeat.

You don't donate to charity because maybe it isn't the perfect solution, but obviously giving money to open source is worthwhile?

I can make something up, but would love to see a guide to how to donate broadly to open source. Apache, GNU, Ubuntu, libinput?

I've been doing this myself with a combo of one-off donations (Ubuntu, Pop OS, libinput) plus experimenting with Github Sponsors on one project.

Here's an example from TripleByte of their employee-directed donations: https://triplebyte.com/open-source-donations

There are so many smaller open source projects I would love to donate to but don't accept donations. I would even pay subscription to them if it ensures their continued development.

Hello, I would like to support open source, but I also want to get my moneys worth (donate to someone who can produce the most value for it). I was thinking of putting up bounties for certain features and bug fixes, but that is time-consuming. What you might say is that I should donate to projects I'm using, but they have roadmaps with features I'm not interested in.
