I tend to point any clients that want low cost hosting towards GeekStorage.com - they have a $35/yr plan. Another is A Small Orange, but I have had much more problems with ASO than I have with GeekStorage.
If you're looking for something 'beefier' - I'm currently with WebFaction.com - awesome guys, great if you need some cheap hosting for your Django/Rails apps (and don't want to pay for a VPS)
I switched to A Small Orange years ago when EIG started swallowing up the world. ASO is fantastic and now I use them with all my clients and startups too.
Side note: an EIG company has given me free hosting for years because their botched takeover of my previous favorite caused them to stop billing me.
I've also had really poor experiences with Dreamhost.
I had a good experience with DiscountAsp.Net. However, if your site gets a lot of traffic or if you want extras, I think it could get pretty expensive. You need to pay extra for subdomains, domain aliases/pointers, or additional sites. Disk space is only 1000 MB and bandwidth is 80 GB for the base plan.
They have a bunch of 3rd-party extensions that is included in the hosting plan but if you leave DiscountAsp, you will need to get licenses for these extensions yourself.
I have since moved to Mosso. Great service though a little expensive ($100 a month + $5 SQL Server db). I can host several web sites though under 1 account.
I recommend A Small Orange. I use their shared and VPS hosting service. Very reliable, affordable and customer centric. Link: https://asmallorange.com/
Try Ultimahosts.net. It's true, there are less choices available for cheap ASP.NET hosting but Ultimahosts have got to be among the best.
You might have to ask to get it but they have shared plans that offer 400 MB storage, unlimited SQL databases, Dotnetpanel controls, unlimited domains + subdomains etc. and plenty of bandwidth to mess around for $15/month.
In fact, they don't seem to even track bandwidth.
My most memory-intensive sites are not on shared hosting but I have many smaller sites hosted on a single shared account. Good luck.
