I switched my family from Windows to Linux at home because of the work involved in keeping a working Windows machine (with minimal user supervision) connected to the internet.

I'm on linux for a good 10 years, even my wife switch over at some point after forced uodates and more slowness. My kids don't even know what windows is, they happily use linux with whatever desktop i provide. My wife even installs her own favourite distro herself.

My dad switched back to windows because he missed his favourite apps, which i could not find a good alternative for (like Windows Movie Maker).

I use Windows for work because that's what corporate likes. But at home I've been running only Linux on laptops and desktops since 2006. In 2020, I switched my mom's home computer to linux. It's been a joy.

Why does anyone use Windows at home anymore? I guess gaming is still an issue?

I switched back to Windows 10 at home. I was a linux user for many years, but because I have a full time IT job, I decided that fixing my linux issues became a huge pain in the ass.

Switching my home computer to Linux has had its problems since I'm an avid gamer, but the more news I read about Windows the less I regret that decision.

Uh, yeah. My whole family runs linux on the desktop almost exclusively. I'm the only one who ever boots into Windows and it's only because that's the only way I can get into my company's system when working from home.

I’ve been using Linux exclusively at home for about 3 years (Fedora). I game, program and do office work. Maybe I’ve just gotten used to it, but I really don’t run into problems these days. I still need to live in windows for work and coming from my home environment I find it pretty painful to work in honestly.

I also switched to Linux after using Windows for 10 years https://medium.com/swlh/why-i-switched-to-linux-after-using-...

I am the family IT guy. Years ago (Windows 2000 era, very young kids) I got tired of maintaining Windows and declared that I would no longer support it. We've been all Linux and Mac since then. For a while, we were Linux only.

I switched my personal machines over to Linux after Microsoft doubled down on forced restarts. Sometimes I keep windows open to resume in the morning, sometimes I want to leave games or projects open and running for long periods of time, and I’ll get around to updates during my own personal maintenance window. When Microsoft started overriding that in increasingly opinionated ways, I made the switch.

The point being, I appreciate having computers around that do what I tell them, instead of having to do what the computer tells me.

I use Linux top to bottom in my home.

My work laptop. My wife's PC. Our plex/jellyfin media server.

My sister's pc and my elderly parents PC are also ubuntu.

I have found my support time for all of them dramatically went down after I got them off windows.

Windows slowing down over time. I longer happens, lengthening the age of hardware and pushing off OS reinstalls, which can at times cost money based on the OEM model.

I can still suck more juice out of a machine with a RAM and add drive upgrade, again, without paying for a reinstall, and saving them lots of money in the process.

LTS/stable distros just work, out of the box, for most people.

Its people like me who have an incessant need to tweak everything that will mess up a Linux desktop.

Last time I had a windows machine in my house was 2005.

Even my elderly parents run Linux, supported by me of course. They don't know even know the difference.

I was running on linux for a couple of years. Then I got tired of my laptop battery being destroyed, the fan on my laptop being in overdrive at all times, and also having everything run slow even though I had paid for top hardware. So I switched back to Windows.

I WISH I could use linux as my primary, but I really can't justify all the flaws just for a bit more security.

Wow. I use Linux and BSD on my own machines, but the rest of the family is on Windows 10. This sort of thing makes me seriously think about trying to get the wife and kids to consider switching :/

I've been using Linux since high school (late 20 here) and i cannot imagine going back to windows. I'm always surprised when a fellow programmer says they use windows at home.

I couldn't live without command prompt. I love updating everything with one move. Now you can even use Steam on linux. Some apps are lacking, but most people don't edit videos or play with Photoshop. Especially now, since most of the desktop usage is internet and web browser, i see no reason to stick with Windows.

But mostly, i just like being in control. Using some perl i can automate almost any menial task.

I managed to convince my mother-in-law to use Linux and drop Windows.

But it seems that convincing the network guys at work is harder than convincing a retiree. Apparently it's easier to administer a Windows network than a Linux one.

Why did you move to Linux?

Jup same for me. At home I allways had Windows and Linux. But Win7 was the last version. Since the Win10 age, i'm Linux only at home.

Yeah but for me Linux (and Android) is a lot more important at home than windows

It's just a personal reason. I make my living on linux and my personal computer is windows os. I like to turn off my work computer as a symbolic gesture and do my hobbies on personal computer. Just to divide work and personal headspace.

I play a lot of games and use lab software for electronic engineering so Windows is a must.

And try to convince my wife I need a third computer.
