But it also tells you why to prefer x over y, every time it gives any recommendations. And it's always explained well. So I think reading this book will help you make conscious decisions while using other languages. It's just a very well written book.. Which is pretty rare..

I think that's a great criterion to use when choosing a language

This is actually a really nice write up for people deciding which language to learn/use if they aren't constrained.

Is seems quite practical to each one of the most used languages in the world. You can then go and pick almost any other language.

Which languages do you recommend then?

I like that "Choosing Languages" is considered advanced.

Looking at other languages (when they exists) can also be very informative.

What I like about it is that it could help me understand a new language. Sometimes it’s easy to follow what’s going on, but sometimes there are just odd language conventions that I’m not used to.

I highly recommend this book. I’m about half way through and it is one of the best on languages that I have read.

On Wikipedia I frequently check other languges for comparison but I've never seen it recommended before.

Are there others who do it too?

When you get into this habit it also makes it easier to translate solutions from other languages too

This proves the point: any language is good as long as you really know what you are doing in that language.

It can also help when jumping around between many different languages, especially when they are similar.

I like that it isn't directed at any specific language but can be taken for whichever language the reader wants. Mostly good advice!

Pick the language you’re most comfortable with. The one you feel good using.

Plus it's awareness of proper idioms in each language and syntax checking makes me much smarter/productive in a new language. Also, it's spell checker keeps me honest. Go for that "green check mark" in the upper right corner and you know you avoided most common mistakes.

Not just the concepts, it's also great to learn and keep the language specific to the topic. (Especially as a non-first-language speaker.)

It's also fun to write and a good way to learn more about languages.

Excellent article, I really enjoy reading about the nuts and bolts of languages.

I love this. I haven't found many articles comparing and contrasting languages this way, and I really appreciate it.
