Maybe Google will be releasing an entirely new app to adopt this new interoperability spec... we haven't seen a Google messenger being retired in what... almost a full year? :)
That is yet to be seen. But generally, Google mainly used to screw up the social applications, so this one should be ok. ;-) And, as it was mentioned, this one is probably needed for Chrome OS.
Sure, but I think Google has still the advantage of having millions of millions of users already using at least one platform. And if this messenger will be delivered through Android, this will be some hard competition for other messengers
Privacy issues aside, this would be awesome. If I'm reading this properly, this isn't just Orkut 2.0 -- it's essentially building a "social networking" API for every part of Google. I dunno about you, but an app that integrates with GMail somehow sounds more useful than your typical Facebook app.
That's just wrong. Imagine a (definitely plausible) future where a snapchat-level social app is created which relies on this local communication. People would obviously jump ship from Chrome to FF if it meant being on the new local social network where all of their friends are. Google isn't going to keep a stick up it's ass when this happens. They will conform, because they follow the money.
