> anybody who has an argument for this must be racist
Anybody who believes people of one skin colour should be treated different than people of another is, in my books, a racist. There's no conversation to be had here.
> Those who object to this barbarism, inflicted upon millions of girls every year, are actually, somehow, called “racists” for doing so.
I am vehemently opposed to female genital mutilation. Even with HN's overly large number of contrarians and trolls, I claim no one can write a convincing argument that my previous sentence is in any way racist.
>it's only unambiguously correct in vacuum with no social context
No it's not, lol. There is quite literally no social context where objecting to someone's given race is the correct moral choice.
> And none of this has anything whatsoever to do with the cultural concept of race.
Quite true. Race is a useless and imprecise term and it’s a pity you felt the need to start talking about it. The clustering of traits among human ancestry population groups and the reasons for that don’t need that baggage.
>I think what the GP meant is that if you're a young white guy
I know what he meant. I know what you mean as well. This isn't a substantive conversation on the issue. You and OP are not putting forward a cogent argument to support a position. You're making an appeal to emotion and valuing an opinion based on the skin color and gender of the person that argued it - not on its own merits.
>It looks like a much more personal attack.
And what does what you are doing look like to you?
> You think it's not problematic for people not to date black women because they are black. Only racists agree with that.
But that's not true. You can be non-racist and non-ableist but still less sexually attracted by certain body types and/or racial features. And you can be racist and at the same time attracted by them.
> I assume the opinion of someone of color would hold more weight.
So you expect me to treat you differently based on revealing your skin colour?
My personal opinion is that such an attitude will do far more harm to racial relations than the use of master / slave in technical documentation. We should be looking to make skin colour as irrelevant as eye colour. You don't get there by bringing up skin colour at every opportunity.
