perhaps a competitor could emerge and steal their thunder? you may say they don't exist now but that isn't necessarily true looking out into the future...

That might have been true before, but there are viable competitors popping up.

Time to create a competitor, right?

Yeah, maybe. But like in tech, it's easier to acquire or destroy a competitor than catch up.

I keep thinking that can't happen, right now it seems to be because there's not a good competitor. That's a scenario we've seen play out enough in the past, I'm personally waiting for something and have been on reddit since 05/06 time.

Aren't they competitors?

Current competitors may go out of business. If there really is a niche, however, seeing off current competitors won't be the end of it. There's always someone else, who may not have burned so much VC.

The other option is that there will never be a sustainable business here.

Aren't there any competitors that can come into this space?

Why don't they build a competitor? It's not like it will fail.

Perhaps, but it needs a proper competitor before it truly fades to irrelevancy.

If their competitors are brave, they'll stick around and take over.

If they were not serving their customers, a competitor will emerge.

How can something be compared as a competitor to spmething else that hasn't even been invented yet? It's difficult arguing the point when you keep regressing back to historically impossible what-ifs.

You're ignoring the existence of competition...

Yes, a product that does not currently exist is a good competitor for products you can buy today.

Agreed. They wouldn't even need to be overtaken. It seems that a lot of the valuation is based on the premise that this is a global winner takes all market. If it turns out that's not true and there is in fact space for multiple competitors then the valuation could turn out to be a lot less.

That would also be an opportunity for a competitor to get a foothold.

Well, if they're competing with Google, and Apple, etc... would they really be competing or just existing?

"Can't" is a strong word, but a company that does will have more resources and likely outcompete it.

Doubtful, plenty of people would jump on the chance to create a competitor, especially since they could market it as a cheaper (or free) alternative.
