what about farmed fish though?

sort by: page size:

Most of the fish you eat is farmed fish.

Farmed fish are fed pellets made of wild caught fish though.

Farmed fish is not much better. It's still fed with fish and farms are really bad for the ecosystems around them (too many nutrients cause dead zones)

Farmed fish are already a lot cheaper, although only some sorts are widely farmed.

Farmed salmon comes to mind.

Many fish (Tuna being a prime example) can't be farmed. There's also a notable decrease in health and nutritional content of farmed fish.

But farmed fish are fed fishmeal made from wild fish...

aren't fish farms fed with other sea catch?

You realize that's specifically talking about farmed Norwegian Salmon and not all fish everywhere, right?

You may know by eating fish that are not possible to farm, like cod.

Edit: Apparently, cod may be farmed (1), though I think the idea still stands.

Or eat farmed fish.

Plenty of seafood is farmed. The majority of shrimp for instance comes from farms.

They often feed the fish in farms with wild fish... it's a joke, currently.

To be clear, this story is about farmed fish from inland, fresh-water fish farms. No sea involved. Fish farms can still cause pollution, of course, but if well managed they should be no worse than any other farm.

Depends to some extent what they're feeding the fish.

Some farmed fish are fed wild-caught fishmeal and fish oil from smaller fish.

Almost all the fish I buy is farm-raised. I trust it more than wild-caught for some reason; I don't want to be eating anything caught off the coast of Fukushima for example.

Farmed fish are often fed unsustainable fish! It's just laundering unsustainability.

A lot of fish you would buy at the supermarket is farm-raised. Especially catfish, salmon, and tilapia.

Farmed fish are sustainable - salmon, talapia...

Actually went to Hawaii for the first time last week caught and caught few Yellowtail and skipjack tuna of the Kona coast. They fight like hell. Ate it on the boat.
