so that I could criticize Google. Actually, I left so that I could talk about the dangers of AI without considering how this impacts Google. Google has acted very responsibly.
Surprised no one has mentioned Doug Bowman's reasons for leaving Google, which seems in part because of extensive use of A/B testing. I don't really know enough to comment on it but it seems relevant: http://stopdesign.com/archive/2009/03/20/goodbye-google.html
I think a Google employee was tasked to remove the search engine choice and hardcode google search into Android.
He didn't want his name to be attached as the person who did this (and we can assume it was some sort of protest to the change) so he committed this as "Anonymous Coward".
Also "Anonymous Coward", as others pointed out, was the way Slashdot referenced guest comments.
nobody gives a shit! why are people spamming the internet with these "why I did this" articles? who cares why YOU did something!? we all do that we feel is best for us, it's called life, I don't want to know your every move; this isn't twitter!
Maybe it's a play on words, initially as the author participating in the act of "google quitting" but also meant to be interpreted as google itself quitting being the google it was.
Robots.txt. I think it's interesting that you say that removing yourself from Google is the same as "disappearing from the web" implying that the web is Google. It's not. Perhaps they should use alternative forms of outreach, something I am considering with my company.
