Election year? Tech industry is becoming the preferred political punching bag.

Tech companies are getting into politics too much

I've come to the conclusion is that politicians have decided that tech is a safe punching bag for both Republicans and Democrats. Republicans can punch up on tech companies to seem like they care about Russian interference without beating up their own candidate, or examining their own advertising practices, and Democrats are still angry that the election was so close and tech seems like something they can just keep punching unlike Comey or Clinton.

We basically need to weather the storm here and act contrite since no one has come to this topic with good intentions of actually trying to fix our elections.

This isn’t about politics. It is about how tech companies are enabling outsiders to create political discord and influence elections.

What is it about the tech industry that makes it so politically inept?

The tech industry is extremely apathetic to local politics and mostly loses fights they try to get into.

Public sentiment has turned at this point. Tech companies are no longer the intrepid, utopic little guy fighting the good fight -- they are the incumbents.

I would bet serious money that one of the hallmarks of the next presidential election is regulation of big tech. The backlash is building. That wave will have some mainstream politicians calling to break up big tech.

Politics are depressing :/

Has the tech industry always been so cutthroat, or is this a new trend? Maybe I just didn't hear about tech companies lobbying for power in the past?

The tech industry seriously needs to organize to have a bigger political clout.

There’s quite a bit of animosity directed at various tech companies from people all over the political spectrum. That is definitely bleeding over into the professional generally.

Tech illiteracy and strong political opinions are rampant. Dangerous combination for tech companies.

I'm not sure what it would mean for them to move the tech industry into their political machine. Could you clarify?

I think it is more that tech (and tech companies) become more subjects of political debate.

Midterms are coming up in the USA, expect the people in the tech companies to steer the technology in a direction that helps the party of virtue

This isn't about tech, it's about politics and profit.

Cynically we could say that the current news cycle is about putting pressure on big tech companies to try to rig the next election in favour of a Democrat.

Even more cynically we could say that an awful lot of people at an awful lot of tech companies want to do exactly that, and “responding to pressure” just gives them a perfect excuse.

If you crowd out the tech and the startups with politics, you'll be left without much of anything.

Other industries are politically involved. Why should tech steer clear? What makes this more of a Pandora's box?

Not just tech. Any company...more people means more politics.

Big tech just keeps greasing the politicians with donations and political favors.
