Depending on the worth of pictures I might save some words here.

Weeney propane torch: http://gigadgetstech.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/Organic_...

A real flamethrower: https://flamethrowerplans.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/03/Fla...

Or, as others have already described, one burns a flammable gas and puts out a flame a few inches long. The other squirts flammable liquid at you from a long ways away, then ignites it. </vast_oversimplification>

That's not a real flame thrower.... I used to do something similar to this when I was 10 with a hair-spray can and a lighter

Yes, those are quite flammable too.

It has to throw burning liquid. Point musk's "flamethrower" at someone for a second and you will burn their clothes and hair. Throw burning gasoline or napalm at them for a second and they will need head-to-toe skin grafts.

Flammable, but not as flammable as a layperson might think.

And flammable.

Don't most hairsprays use hydrocarbons as propellant?

Well, either alcohol or hydrocarbons would make a decent flamethrower.

Try setting a gas cloner on fire.

I still prefer the engineer who lights a charcoal grill in 30 seconds with a piece of flaming paper and 4 quarts of liquid oxygen.

See: Halon fire extinguisher

I once watched a youtube video of a guy talking about the offensive uses of flamethrowers who said they actually kill most people via carbon monoxide poisoning in bunkers rather than burning them to death. I think it was meant to try and make them seem less macabre, but it had the opposite effect for me. Certainly didn't make a bunker sound all that appealing as a defense.

It's easier to light, but it's pretty non-explosive if not mixed with air: https://www.youtube.com/shorts/_RKdWYqgu3Y (mixing with air is a problem).

The big advantage (and what could be designed for) is that hydrogen goes up and so (by default) the flammable stuff escapes.

I was surprised except for California (and maybe another state) owning a flamethrower is legal.

$1800 "Get Yours Today".

Complete, of course, with a Napalm mix package https://throwflame.com/products/napalm-mix-fuel-gelling-agen... "It thickens normal fuel to create a long lasting burn that goes great with your X15 Flamethrower"

These are basically in the same category as WWI/WWII military flamethrowers. It seems these should be very illegal but I guess they are not. That just boggles my mind.

Laziest way possible? Flamethrower.

This might cause some... collateral issues.

Fire extinguisher. We call it the budget halon system. ;)

Less safe: Take one of these ...

... filled with lighter fluid, plus one of these ...

and some duct tape.

Got that from William S. Burroughs' The Wild Boys.

Excuse me, sir, flamebait is classified as a destructive device. I'm going to need to see the NFA tax stamp for this post.

It's also very flammable, which is a bit of a problem.

Safer than gasoline. It just burns with a pretty blue flame.

You could make a really stupid fire starter stick out of it, scrape with a knife and toxic sparks are now in the air.
