It's a cult around the idea of meritocracy, which isn't necessarily the same as an actual meritocracy.

And a "cult" around an idea meritocracy means that most of the problems of cults won't happen, because decisions will get made on the merits, rather than on ideology.

Seems like that's conflating actual meritocracy with an exploited/fake form of meritocracy.

Actual meritocracies are rare, but that doesn't mean we should redefine "meritocracy" to be the the distorted (and more common) version of it.

meritocracy doesn't mean what you think it does.

The article is saying that people say meritocracy exists, but act in ways and expect things that contradict a meritocracy.

Meritocracy isn't real. It's a nice ideal but it isn't real.

It's not a meritocracy

Meritocracy is a nonsensical construct and rarely amounts to anything more than further nourishing the already nourished. Often to the exclusion of nourishing those that actually need it. It's a perverse, self-deluding form of domination.

Meritocracy seems to be looked at with derision by some these days. It's a worrisome trend.

Meritocracy is a fiction.

It's most definitely not a meritocracy.

Sounds like a rebrand of meritocracy.

Meritocracy isn’t a thing. The person who coined it was rightfully mocking society. The recent 2019 Meritocracy Trap book goes further into this.

Your explanation is not “meritocratic”. The wealthy and powerful largely stay on top with the nuance you provided. The popular have more popular. are able to make what they link to more powerful and thus more popular. There is no meritocracy there.

Meritocracy is a bullshit term. It does not exist in reality. It’s an illusion, a joke.

How can a system dominated by posers be called a "meritocracy"? I am sure it looks superficially the same, but in essence is the exact opposite.

this is what they call meritocracy.

Really? People who interpret 'meritocracy' in a narrow, little known historical context, as being a conspiracy against miniorities, rather than it's currently accepted form, sound like conspiracy theorists.

Meritocracy?

What do you think this is? Some kind of meritocracy?

It's actually "fighting against the idea that we actually live in a meritocracy, because we don't."
