Seems like that's conflating actual meritocracy with an exploited/fake form of meritocracy.

Actual meritocracies are rare, but that doesn't mean we should redefine "meritocracy" to be the the distorted (and more common) version of it.

Meritocracy is a nonsensical construct and rarely amounts to anything more than further nourishing the already nourished. Often to the exclusion of nourishing those that actually need it. It's a perverse, self-deluding form of domination.

Meritocracy isn’t a thing. The person who coined it was rightfully mocking society. The recent 2019 Meritocracy Trap book goes further into this.

Your explanation is not “meritocratic”. The wealthy and powerful largely stay on top with the nuance you provided. The popular have more popular. are able to make what they link to more powerful and thus more popular. There is no meritocracy there.
