Works only for some sites. If the large preview is a stretched thumbnail of that picture, then "open image in new tab" will not get you the full image but the thumbnail.
Hmm.. do you know the size of the image? Also, there’s no loading wheel so it might take a second depending on the size of the image. Just tried on mobile with a 1.8mb image and the preview popped up.

I've seen the same behaviour on OS X with an Intel GPU: https://i.imgur.com/3fagsYx.jpg (screenshot of the contents of a browser tab - pretty sure it was Chrome. The Rooster Teeth page you can see parts of had been closed hours prior)
If somebody sends me an image, I can click on the thumbnail and open it full-size about once in five attempts. Usually it will just open up to a blank screen and fail to load the image.
You must be right-clicking the thumbnail in the image search list.
Instead, first left-click the thumbnail to open the larger image preview. Then right-click the large preview image and select "open image in new tab". You will get the full image.
If anyone has an example where this doesn't work, I'd be curious to see it. It works every time for me.
Why all thumbnails seem to be loading full version of image? Haven't seen this in long time that as I scroll through article thumbnails are still just slowly loading while they should be loaded instantly. I mean it's hard to take seriously someone talking about other sites who can't design own site to load properly.
Not correct, we generate 2 thumbnails sizes for every cover -- if the site loads full-size anywhere by default (rather than when you expand it) it's definitely a bug!
Mine is mostly fine, but it doesn't load the full version of images for a few days now. It will show me the inline cropped version, but I can't click through to the larger one.
That happens when the large picture hasn't yet loaded. If you wait it usually will load.
