The ultimate goal is to make money, not serve ads.

The owners want money, not the pleasure of seeing ads.

That needs money, not advertising.

Right: we are not interested in trying to make money using advertising; we intend to make money by charging for a service that we would pay.

We will never run ads. We plan to make money primarily by offering pro subscriptions and a version of Wavelength for organizations.

I believe what they are saying is that money is not the goal, the goal is the spread chess, and having ads does not contribute to that goal. That’s it.

I find it quiet strange, that we are living in a world where ads are so ubiquitous that a site is explaining why they don’t have ads, rather than webpages that use ads explain why they do.

The only reason is to collect advertiser dollars.

We don't sell ads but we are selling ourselves so you can sell ads in the future.

Not primarily an ad-based business.

Yes, no monetization through targeted ads.

The author is referring to brands that typically pay for ads, not provide them.

Not using immoral methods (like advertising/tracking) to generate income.

But no ads. Cause we aren't in it for the money.

That's literally the point of the product... non ads based monetization

If you're a serious startup, you're not monetizing off display ads.

:)

If your entire business model is ads, then you have no business model.

The general sentiment I'm seeing is not simply "don't advertise" but to make those dollars count more than buying adwords etc. can do for you. In some cases that even means doing time consuming things that don't cost money. That's all business motivated, still.

And even if you get rid of the ads, the sponsored content is not going anywhere.

In a world with zero advertising (but good alternative business models) no one will wish for ads return. They're not good for the world and don't need to be part of the future.

Oh, I don't make any money with ads.
