I've not tried it, but how easy is it to fake the ID? Like, does the photo feed to a person that OKs the ID manually, or does it just look for some vaguely rectangulary shaped object?
It's kind of a big flub when you think about the real ID in practice. People do make fake real IDs. You can have every security feature you can think of implemented remarkably well in a fake ID, except for it to scan and turn up your correct information from a database. Real ID doesn't change that. The old fake IDs couldn't scan, the new ones can't either, but in either case when the task is buying a case of beer at a gas station or getting into a bar this hardly matters.
IDs are not that hard to fake really, once you know how to take them apart without destroying them. What's always amazed me more, though, is how your address is never actually physically verified. Ever.
I can order a copy of my drivers license and change the address to "1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, Washington, DC" and they'll ship it to me quick as can be. If you happen to find somebody who looks a lot like you (or you can modify your face to look like them) you can just get their social or drivers license # and order a copy to a different mailing address. The original owner is never notified.
If you want to just make yourself a brand new ID under someone else's identity you can get a new driver's license under someone else's name. Bring two forms of ID (a birth certificate which you can order with a SSN or a faked certificate of US citizenship along with a faked insurance card), a faked telephone or utility bill, and a proof of social security number (a faked payroll statement and a faked insurance or IRS statement with name and SSN). Then make an appointment at the DMV and get a fully valid new government ID with your picture and someone else's name.
That's something a terrorist could do without much trouble once they had someone to target. You don't even need Photoshop to fake those documents; just a Kinkos, MS Word, Paint and some scissors. Just get the guy's name and SSN (which thanks to LulzSec there are plenty of leaked to the internets) and go to town. Should take about a week, maybe two if the fake birth certificate takes a while to ship. You can also do without the birth certificate if you just order a copy of the person's drivers license.
So yeah. The fact that the TSA doesn't check your ID past glancing at it and putting a mark on your ticket isn't that scary to me, since anyone who really wants to can get a valid ID which will pass all checks in a couple weeks.
Its easy to get fake ids that look very real (ask a local 20 year old).
Also you often do not even need to take a picture of an ID to open an account online, just have the info of an identity that you steal.
After that, you get an atm card, wear a covid mask, shades and hat, call to raise the limit and take it out asap.
It's difficult to make a convincing fake ID, but trivial to make a fake "photocopy" of an ID.
Photocopies are low quality, often black and white. They bypass most, if not all, security features on physical ID documents, can be digitally altered, etc.
Spending a few minutes tricking a CSR on the phone isn't even close to the difficulty of obtaining a workable fake ID. Barriers are useful even if they can be crossed with sufficient effort.
Actually pretty easy. Thought of it after that post. No physical id requirement. Look into camera and enter SSN/DOB/name into PIN pad. If no match no vote. In case of identity theft there will be a collision and in that case let them through but send the photos and data to the police to arrest the faker.
Yeah correct, but IDs are easily fake able anyway. The purpose of ID is to stop low leve falsification, high level ID forgery involves bribes for .
Worst comes to it, I’d opt more for biometric verification provided the software / hardware is produced by a sane entity such as local government and not some seedy nightclub.
