Or more simply, just allow users to self host. Users can trust one version of the app, and then only update when they need a new feature, at which point they can choose to trust that version.

However, that already exists. I can use NextCloud in this manner and the have a note app.

What about a self hosted nextcloud/owncloud server? It will be easy to manage on all devices.

If you are up to self-hosting, Nextcloud has this feature as well :)

> nextclouds in aws

Now make the owncloud/nextcloud a reliable experience for more than one user, handle updates and occassional migrations, etc.

Personally I use NextCLoud for things like Notes[1], while it is a web app it is self hosted. Obviously this means you then need to run NextCloud yourself which is an entirely different problem.

It has NextCloud support built in and I think they offer a NextCloud account to users (fee?) but hopefully a person could self host.

Maybe it time we make it easy for people to host thier own clouds… Like Nextcloud. All in one at home server with Owncloud Plug-N-Play. While we are at it, have it ready to go for hosting emails and Federated Social Media.

To be honest, it would be a challange, but totally doable.

Decetralize the interenet once again!

Self-hosted Nextcloud would be good for this

Nextcloud if you can self host it.

Nextcloud/owncloud if you want to self-host

NextCloud is a popular fork of OwnCloud by its original developer, and doesn't seem to gate features on their self-hosted version.

There is also Nextcloud which provides for most self-hosting needs in a single package (calendar, tasks, file storage, notes, music, photos, device tracking, etc.)

This sounds great. Would you consider making this a plugin for owncloud/nextcloud?

It'd be really great if you could use something like Nextcloud for sync, instead of proprietary services.

What sort of Android? Normal Google-provided Android, which contains closed-source components? Or do you have an open-source alternative in mind?

Where do I self-host NextCloud?

NextCloud and OwnCloud already exists.

Cool idea. I will try this combination soon. For someone who has not been following the projects, NextCloud vs Owncloud? Which one should I choose now?

If you're okay with self-hosting then you might checkout nextcloud.

There's also NextCloud, although you'll need to pay for it or host it yourself.

you can self-host NextCloud on your laptop or desktop.

you can use whichever flavor of Android you'd like - a lot of people like GrapheneOS
