Oh no? Burger Kind currently has the best veggie burger of any fast food chain. That char flavour sets it apart. Though maybe that will be in the new one too.

You'd be wrong. The latest generation of veggie burgers are incredibly good. I actually got a taste of the Beyond Burger from a promotional Economist truck and it was really, really good. It's not perfect, but I'd say it's an 80-90% match in terms of flavor and texture to a real, grilled juicy hamburger. Instantly superior to generic fast-food burgers. Not yet competition for high-end stuff. And I'm not sure they have produced a credible steak. But veggie burgers are now a solved problem.

I don't want these "Impossible" burgers to eliminate veggie burgers doing their own thing, and I'm a bit worried it might eventually come to the point where everyone thinks they need to be just like beef.

Some of the existing veggie burgers are very tasty even though they don't try to trick your taste buds in replicating the 'meat experience' 100%. Like Morningstar Farms Tomato & Basil Pizza burgers are just awesome, for example. They're one of my mainstays for super-quick lunches. You can see and taste the veggies in the burger and they taste great.

And I'm saying this as a meat eater, who grilled beef hamburgers on the grill just last night

The BK veggie burger is pretty good. McDonalds will often say "we can serve you the burger without the beef pattie on it"

As someone who's been eating these things for a long time, it's notable they made something that's actually good.

Historically, veggie burgers were terrible. Most meat eaters still love their beef, but most of my friends actually like Beyond Burgers and get them not because they care about the environment or animal rights, but simply because they like the taste and want something beside a beef burger for a change.

I'm not saying it can't be replicated. I have no idea how well these companies will hold their share in the future. If I had to bet, I'd bet that McDonald's and Burger King and Wendy's will all make their own version, and Kraft or Frito Lay will make one for supermarkets, too.

But the market has definitely changed with the newer burgers. They're actually good now!

I've always liked veggie burgers. The best ones are as good as very good hamburgers (in a different way). Some others are not so good.

But it tastes like a patty of vegetables instead of a mock meat burger. Not really even the same category.

I really hope McDonalds adds a veggie burger to their menu soon, too. I try to avoid meat, but often end up eating it in fast food for the convenience and due to a lack of alternatives.

The newer ones (Beyond, Impossible) are a lot closer nutritionally to beef than the older style of veggie burgers that were mostly bean-based in my experience. Those could still be pretty good for what they were, but not really comparable to beef.

McDonald's had an all-veggie burger back in the 80's in the United States, but it went away.

I don't know if it was nationwide, or regional. It came out around the same time as the McDLT, which was awesome.

(As an aside, one of the things that has always bugged me about McDonald's is its menu inconsistency from market to market. The franchisees have too much power, IMO. I have to drive a few hundred miles each year to get McRibs because the local franchise owners won't carry it. And McRibs don't freeze well.)

Most of the places I know of selling Impossible Burgers used to sell a veggie burger. Looks like an incremental improvement to me.

100% in agreement. It’s not even in the fast food places I struggle to find a plain bean burger now… it’s the supermarkets too.

The odd peculiar taste of these kinds of new plant based burgers can be pretty foul. For me and my partner, the Burger King veggie burger now tastes similar to dish soap.

Bring back the delicious bean burgers and actual normal veggie burgers.

Go try a good veggie burger. They've been around a lot longer then the impossible burger, and taste a lot better.

I love a good veggie patty burger. I also like the Impossible burger. I'd love to see both on a menu so I can choose the one I want. And heck I'll eat a meatburger on special occasions as well. There are a couple of local restaurants that had really nicely done veggie patties that have been displaced by Beyond/Impossible burgers, and it's a shame.

That's honestly a big upgrade though. When was the last time you had a veggie thing that tasted remotely like beef? I haven't had the opportunity for an impossible burger yet but I've never found any veggie product to be remotely close to meat imitation.

Ya the Beyond Burger is a good veggie burger. The impossible burger is a really good meat substitute, particularly the new version.

Ah, a veggie burger. Truly a paradigm-shifting innovation.

At least Burger King has veggie burgers! I mean, come on McD's!

Mcsomething it had to be. The question is what is the something. McVeggie doesn't work, because veggie burgers became synonymous with the last generation of plant based burgers. McPlant does sound awkward right now but with the full backing of mcdonalds marketing / their resturant footprint it will roll of the tongue within a few months of launch.

Everyone's preferences and taste buds are different.

I'll take an Impossible Burger over a veggie burger any day.
