Not sure why the fine must go to government. It creates perverse incentives here.

Fines like this are mostly pointless, a cost of doing business.

If governments want to stop being defrauded by corporations, they need to respond with criminal penalties like imprisonment, the same as they would to a regular citizen.

I'm curious about the potential legal basis for such a fine.

Fined by who, and for what? What a strange comment. Why would the government police such matters?

Because the fine is punitive, not cost-based.

All the fines eventually get paid by the tax-paying public, so it's a no-win to fine government agencies.

Really not sure why the firm is paying fines for this. Seems more like each individual should lose their license.

Perhaps the fines could go to the government's general treasury.

Where are the proceeds of the fine going?

This "fine" should be returned to the American people and not used to fund obscure government programs

I never see satisfaction in the government collecting big fines. The money really ought to go to the affected consumers.

One could make the argument that the State receiving the income from these fines would go back to fund public services, benefiting consumers.

Additionally, the state pursuing issues like this helps 'keeps the bastards honest' and prevents more consumers from being violated in the future. It's like how a murderer going to jail doesn't result in the victims from being compensated.

The cynical viewpoint says the fine is there for 'revenue generation' purposes.

The fines are made as a revenue source, not to disincentivize anything.

How much is the fine? Seems like just the cost of doing business there.

Good luck making this stick in Australia. Private entities aren't allowed to levy fines or anything that work like fines.

We need to legislate that any fines like this go back to customers instead of government /s

Who gets the money from fines like these?

$30 billion fine, that's appropriate. Dude get the pricing right, government should get valuators for this, it's not a percentage of the profits, it's double or treble the damages.

The issue with this kind of fine is that the profit is greater than the fine so they will continue to do shady things like this.

Also people in charge for approving this should be held accountable.

Also, what is the point of a fine if it doesn't go to the people that the company wronged? Where does this money go? To the corrupt government entities that don't give a shit about the fees consumers have been charged?
