I feel like I already said "I understand but I disagree".

A round wheel is more useful for a car than a triangular wheel. That doesn't mean it's a "car wheel". It's just as good on a horse wagon or a bike.

It's not better at all than reinventing the wheel. The wheel should be reinvented until someone makes one that isn't square.

So you need a wheel, but you end up getting a whole car, and the wheels turn out to be octagons, which don't work great for your purpose (but basically work on more different terrains that different users had problems with?) ... and in half the time and one-hundredth the price you could have just made the round wheel you need.

Redditors seem to take a certain pride in being uneducated. Better to spend months reinventing a square wheel poorly than to Google a bit and find a paper on how to design round wheels.

there is another starting point for 1.

1. identify a problem you can solve better than anything else on the market.

If everyone is using square wheels, build a round one, even if people aren't asking for it.

Sure, sometimes you loose with a superior product. But it's a pretty big advantage to have.

So true. And these crappy wheels keep getting reinvented over and over at different companies. Sharing the effort and making a better wheel for everyone sounds like a good idea so long as it's not your core business. There must be a downside right?

A wheel is a circle. A circle has infinite edges. Therefore you can always make a rounder wheel.
