Isn't the N Netflix? I think it's just Bay Area/Silicon Valley companies, while Microsoft is up north in Washington.

sort by: page size:

I've never seen that acronym before. It is hard for me to imagine any way in which Netflix would be more similar to the other four than Microsoft.

edit: perhaps this is a regional difference; are you in the Bay Area? I imagine that Microsoft has less of a presence there, and perhaps Netflix is a bigger deal down south than they appear to be here in Seattle.

Outside of the Silicon Valley they are called GAFAM (Netflix out, Microsoft in).

I understand the GAFAM, but is Netflix even in the same ballpark? (It's also extremely dependent on Hollywood, isn't it?) And Microsoft isn't in the Silicon Valley...

N is for Netflix. Microsoft is hardly relevant.

Well sure, the N literally stands for netflix. But semantically, it's often used as "the big tech companies". At least that what it means in my head. And that's Apple, Microsoft, (gap), Google, Amazon, (gap), Telsa, Facebook, at least by market cap. Netflix isn't anywhere close.

i live in silicon valley, but dude, it's FAAMG. Netflix is just a player in a much larger world.

The "shift" has already been happening for a decade or more, covid just created a few visible outlier migrations that have pushed the conversation into the open.

At this point, Netflix is the only major company I know of that that still locates 100% of software work in the Bay Area.

Is Netflix a Silicon Valley company? I think so.

The article claims the trend of going big on streaming started at Netflix and the more traditional players followed along. It seems a reasonable claim.

People are so stuck on the acronym that think of MS as less of a tech company than Netflix? Microsoft is much larger than Netflix no matter how you measure it.

Netflix was started in Los Gatos, California. Silicon-Valley-ish. Gumroad sells documentary films. They've grown. Funded by Silicon Valley Kleiner Perkins VC fund.

This is Amazon, Netflix, and, in the past, Microsoft.

The problem is the N.

Netflix does matter to you if you are working anywhere near software in the Silicon Valley, but is just not in the same tier as the rest of them. The opposite for the missing Microsoft.

That's why the rest of the world uses GAFAM and not FAANG.

Why are we lumping in Netflix instead of Microsoft in the group of big tech?

Netflix is quite small - some bigger companies include Intuit, Symantec, LinkedIn, and a slew of major semiconductor companies.

First time I've seen it too, but I find it more fitting actually. I see Microsoft as a lot more of a tech giant than Netflix, but maybe Im judging by the wrong criteria.

I can’t believe there was a time where Microsoft wasn’t considered as big of a tech company as Netflix.

Yeah, I dunno how netflix is in that acronym and not Microsoft. If you are gonna put in "netflix" might as well include salesforce, dropbox or github.

It's odd to have an acronym that includes Netflix but not Microsoft - I'll give you that.

What does Microsoft have to do with Netflix?
