We’re building the future of identity, privacy, financial markets and commerce through blockchains and other cryptographic technologies. At the core of this work is Polkadot - a platform that enables blockchains of all kinds to interact and stay secure. This is an opportunity to work at the forefront of technological development and join in shaping the future of society.
Security is at the heart of decentralised protocols and applications. Extensive reliance on correct implementation and good user practices necessitates that we spend sufficient time on Security in the Web3 ecosystem.
Web3 Foundation aims to ensure that crucial projects and networks are sufficiently reviewed and monitored, as well as any developers and users are aware of best security practices. The Security team will be responsible for the initiatives that allow us to achieve those goals together with our open source community.

The Web3 Foundation is committed to distributing a significant amount of funding for the development of open source software that will contribute to the creation of the Web3 technologies stack. The purpose of this role is to continuously refine the technology roadmap, set up of processes which allow for execution of the roadmap and evaluate the merit of grant applications, i.e. determine whether the proposed project represents a meaningful contribution and evaluate the level of technical expertise of teams or individuals that apply.

There is a security working group. If you are concerned about this I highly recommend joining the foundation as an individual (or getting your employer to join), and asking to be put on that WG.
It’s a critically important question and it requires active grassroots involvement to make sure that we don’t end up with a mere clone of ME, or worse a “better ME.”
We Make: A security layer for modern data infrastructures.
Why: Keeping data secure and private should be easy. We help organizations to keep sensitive data secure by enabling them to easily pseudonymize, anonymize or encrypt it.
Team: Five, full-time
We need help with: Marketing and community building. We're building an open-core solution and want to open-source our first libraries / tools in the coming months, so we're looking for people that are passionate about data security and privacy and that want to help us build a great toolkit. We are looking for developers, writers, open-source volunteers and community builders. Please reach out to hn@kiprotect.com for more information. Let's make data security easy!
Over at Security First (www.secfirst.org) our small, non-profit team builds Umbrella App - a free open source tool that helps people like activists and journalists manage their digital and physical security.
We are always looking for people who are able to volunteer some time to help us on things like Android Development, back end work, UI/UX, design, marketing and copyrighting.
I you want to support this kind of thing, get involved with Jonny Long's "Infosec Without Borders" project. http://infosecwithoutborders.org/ The idea is to assign hackers to help non-profits around the world in exchange for professional references to get their "legitimate" careers off the ground.
Would anyone be able to provide a summary of the players and funding for the w3c? My only exposure is the 3p cookie deprecation working group which has had a lot of work being done by companies google/Fb/etc and I assumed they provided some funding to the project managers.
We're opening up our threat intelligence system on the blockchain and soon to reward people in a new token for submitting and validating links. Mostly geared towards anti-phishing, malware, child safety and news credibility. metacertprotocol.com
CTF365 It's a Startup on bootstrap mode (self funded) that will change the way Information Security is learned. We try to do our best with very few resources. No seed money, no Kickstarter money but full of passion and dedication.
-We are a human rights organisation building and about to launch Umbrella - an open source, free Android app to help journalists, activists and aid workers manage their physical and digital security on the move.
-We are looking for copywriters, PR and app dev/UI/UX people who can can volunteer a few hours to help us with the final push. (Final copy review for the website/Google Play Store, QA testing on the app etc).
Hi, we build open source technology to make it easier for people to learn about and manage their physical and digital security on the move through our app Umbrella.
Our core set of users until now has been activists, journalists and human rights defenders all over the world. They deal on a daily basis with issues from being hacked to being kidnapped.
Anyone can use our free, open source iOS/Android apps. Web version in testing here https://umbrella.secfirst.org Learn more about our work helping some of the most courageous people on the world at https://www.secfirst.org.
We have found some awesome people here on HN before over the years (Hey Rok!) and now it would be great to find some people who are interested in helping give us a bit of a boast - from funders to founders. Especially techies who can volunteer time and possibly someone interested in coming onboard and helping us build out an open source business model around some of our tools (specially our CMS, Tent) to allow other organisations to help manage and train their own staff security more effectively. We've already had a lot of interest in that area, so it would be great to have people help us explore that opportunity to diversify.

We run Security First as a non-profit.(https://www.secfirst.org). I also helped setup an UK charity called Videre (https://www.videreonline.org). It really depends on what you are doing. We build technology and training to help activists, journalists and people in high risk areas manage their security - through our free, open source mobile app, Umbrella. So we found and apply to funders who provide grants to help us build this. Public donations are actually quite a hard business model for non-profits as it really requires a huge amount of public visibility and work to keep them coming in. I recommend looking for grants first of all. I know the space pretty well so feel free to drop me a mail to the email in my profile and I'm happy to share some thoughts!
Hmm, we applied with our non-profit tool, Umbrella App, for managing the physical and digital security of journalists and activists (https://www.secfirst.org) a few years ago when we were only getting started but didn't get in. It seems like it's needed now more than ever, so we might look at making another application to help bring us to the next stage of our development.
We want to establish an alternative to Let’s Encrypt that is taking the core features and values from ISRG.
That’s not based on “bad US!1!”, more then a alternative would strengthen the ecosystem. This also means to create an alternative ecosystem like boulder.
The current challenges are mostly about incorporating the non-profit and structure it right. So that it’s as open as possible.
Motivation? To help shape the security landscape and bring much wanted features that are not viable for Let’s Encrypt to implement. Viable describes that boulder would require major rewrites for it to get implemented.
Specially we want to provide SMIME and .onion certificates.
