Not to mention, with RES on old reddit you can turn the Javascript for specific subs off. Not sure if that's even possible on New, which I hate. The JS is often just overcrowded and too much, so I'd prefer it off.
I think old.reddit.com's interface is more user-friendly than HN's. Why should I leave the page to write a comment? Avoiding JS just for the sake of avoiding is just blind fanaticism under the pretense of being faster and more lightweight.
(The new reddit redesign is a resource hogging abomination riddled with needless SPA bullshit, but the old reddit design was pretty clean and minimal and yet an SPA.)
Have you ever compared the page load times of reddit with and without RES? It's horrific. And adjusting the settings? they have search functionality for the settings because there's so many settings.
The only things I use from RES are the account manager and the subreddit manager. I hate the never ending reddit with a burning passion, and don't even get me started on the highlighting posts that you've clicked on crap.
Agreed. I see a "Use new Reddit as my default experience" preference checkbox not to click if you don't want (longtimer here...) . It also supports RSS for subreddits, that's nice.
Reddit without RES (also uBlock Origin) is reddit that's only 50-75% usable. Though I would also say old.reddit is infinitely superior to the newer reddit interface as well.
old.reddit is ok, but it's rarely used for links. I know there's a plugin, but I can't stand the idea of adding plugins for things like that. The only reason I have a reddit account is because you can change preferences to be even better than old.reddit (e.g. turn off custom themes, disable outbound click tracking, no thumbnails, compact list, etc.). It basically looks like HN after what I do to it. I know it's all arranging deck chairs on a sinking ship but I hope a decent rescue ship gets here before it's all gone.
Stupid question but I’m out of the loop here. What’s the main beef with the Reddit site and app? Is it just accessibility and moderation tools or something else?
I do use RES in desktop, but I mostly use it via the official mobile app these days. I used to miss old.Reddit.com but now I’m rather indifferent.
I dislike Reddit purely on a technical level - their new UI is a disaster and is way too heavy, they’re sending you more JavaScript than actual content.
New Reddit (aka, Really Obnoxious Interface Reddit) uses that as well. Since Old Reddit is the only useable version of Reddit (IMHO), it's really annoying to see people make such extensive use of it as it gets butchered for Old Reddit users.
Yes it (new reddit) even brings my i5 to its knees... Way overbloated with javascript. Also in FF by the way. Perhaps Chrome is better but I won't use it.
I feel like this would be a very easy change for Reddit Enhancement Suite (RES) to implement and have support for by default.
But this gets into my similar point where you end up having to use tools like an extension or bot to fix functionality reddit leaves out.
It's gotten pretty annoying for some things already. Old reddit doesn't support polls but in a weird way you can still see it from old reddit like an embedded piece of media.
Overall it's already feeling pretty hacky and I'm sure it's just going to keep getting worse. I've tried to switch to new reddit multiple times and it's just so much slower. I'll admit it "looks" better, but I still get the same functionality but in a more efficient manner on the old reddit. The new reddit just feels slow and bloated.
Yeah it's crazy how bad user-hostile reddit.com has become. Fortunately old.reddit.com is still available, but for how long? If only Javascript did not exist, it would be impossible for UX people to come up with something that bad.
The old.reddit redirect and RES are really the only reason I've continued to use the site at all.
With a well curated selection of subreddits (and removal of a lot of the "default" ones) it's actually really good. My brain naturally starts going "these links aren't really interesting anymore" after 100-200 links, and I task switch as a result.
