Future of warfare is going to something more like Command And Conquer game, where operators will direct autonomous machine with a click of a mouse and warfare will be mostly done at a distance....
Sounds like RTS for the battle field. Can't wait for they day when teenage Supreme Commander experts take out entire countries using point and click control of swarms of robots.
This doesn't surprise me, not because I have any real world knowledge or experience of warfare, but because I used to have fun taking out tanks in Unreal Tournament 2005 with more maneuverable vehicles armed with energy weapons. I guess this is a case of sci fi becoming reality.
(I mean no disrespect to those fighting on the front lines by trivializing their experience with a video game metaphor; I pray for safety for both sides and for eventual peace).
It's kinda funny and pragmatic at the same time. Soon tanks and planes will be controlled this way too. It will be much easier to train all the gamers for war in reality.
I think modern wars will be fought by tousands of pro-gamers using something like 3d rts ui.
For example if we have 50 drones doing some task it's stupid to hire 50 people to manage them like pilots. Much better to hire 5 people and give them better ui (construct 360 degree view from all the drones feeds localy and send only the aggregated information.
You're exactly correct about war games. Warfare is more than just moving units around a battlefield. It involves psyops, cyber, logistics, and other factors that are way too complex for contemporary AI to consider.
So... I’m curious how long this will be before we can apply this to real life?
At this point it seems like it’d be fairly complicated, but you could build a solid simulator for battles. Then direct humans and / or robots around the battle field as nessecary to win a battle.
Upload a virtual map utilizing some point clouds, estimate densities, start with estimating enemy combatants, add some scoring metrics negatively impacting civilian deaths and probably a lot of other stuff. Run real life scenarios in training environments, and bam.
War has always been a game of each side adapting their offensive/defensive weapons to their opponents' defensive/offensive improvements. I expect that to continue. But that doesn't prevent me from admiring clever optimizations along the way.
AR artillery battles - strap on some AR goggles and man the helm of an artillery company taking on others within range who are also playing on the same server.
