I doubt most people care.

Outside of a few friends, I doubt most people I know know that this is 1) going on and 2) who Assange even is.

This might be true is some echo chamber, but it doesn't seem like almost anybody cares. Is there some kind of survey that says otherwise? Unless you are a huge fan of Assange prior to all this I cannot think of anybody (person, media, or otherwise) that is even following this.

A lot of Americans know about Assange, what he has done, how much he has risked to help Americans know the truth about our government.

Yet in spite of this nobody really cares, and most are content to let Assange be extradited and punished. Other than for partisan reasons, few care a whole lot about any of the information Wikileaks published that revealed significant misdeeds and corruption by government officials, none of whom have been brought to justice.

Many people care about Julian Assange.

Most people don't even know the difference between Snowden and Assange, if they recognize the names at all.

They would do the same if they got into power.

Let me split hairs. I am not convinced that Assange deserves everything he is getting, but it is really hard for me to care. The parent post was about why nobody cares, and I answered it truthfully.

I think you're dramatically overestimating the percentage of US voters who give a flying shit about Assange.

Your first footnote doesn't seem to support the claim that most American's don't know who Assange is. Did you perhaps link to the wrong article?

That would make me really sad if its true.

I don’t care much about Assange but that’s a fair statement.

There’s a large (the vast majority), who think what is happening to Assange is a travesty.

Many of those same people don’t do anything about it. They still vote the same exact way they have for 15-20 years, they don’t get active and write anyone, etc.

The real travesty about Assange is that he’s not even a US citizen. He tried to reach out to the state department to redact sections and they refused to respond. Then they go after him for publishing what some other person leaked. Not only that, but the leaker had a publicly funded transition and a short prison sentence. Assange is charged and has endured much worse.

My principles (and many others) still stand. But our “deep state” doesn’t represent the majority.

Nobody cared until the media made them care in the first place, to build anti-Wikileaks and anti-Assange sentiment. Awful convenient that they stop talking about him the moment there’s concrete evidence that the whole thing was a setup.

I don't think most of South America know who Assange is, it's pretty fringe nerdy news over here, I would guess Ecuatorians a bit more though, but doubt most are into the detail but rather have a vague idea.

But no one pays attention to information that isn't released with careful fanfare. Assange handles the media quite well, and most organizations would be better off releasing this stuff voluntarily so no one pays attention.

Please provide evidence that the leaks are from Russia.

Also, many people care a lot about Assange. Millions of people care about Assange and WikiLeaks. It is absolutely absurd (and almost un-humanitarian) to try to downplay the work that he has done.

I'm aware. What's that got to do with Assange?

Assange?

It's not because you have nothing to hide that it's not important. People like Julien Assange are created every day, and they need support in cases like this.

The sad part is how few people even know what he published, especially juxtaposed with his sacrifice. If I go talk to the average person about Snowden or Assange they know little to nothing about what they revealed.

My point is that a lot of U.S. citizens will be reading this and if they are feeling a healthy dose is concern for Mr. Assange they should be aware that his essentially the fate of many of their countrymen.

Well, most people know Assange from politics and I knew him better from being the Surfraw author. To each its own, I suppose.
