It’s going to be super interesting to see what the reaction to this is (if any). Even though they sound like a terrible company, everyone should take note how easy it is for Google, Mozilla, Microsoft, etc. to make them disappear from existence.

The only company even remotely in a position to kill google is google itself. If they mess up badly enough in the eyes of their users then there would be a mass exodus, as long as they keep doing what they're doing now they will outlast all of us.

It's not like they have a choice now, the other choice here is to shut down the company. That's also why they launched Firefox OS, they hope in the future to depend less on Google.

Can't wait for google to die out. Glad to see they are on their way.

I'm hoping they don't and Google just dies.

So long, DDG. Censorship before they even gained enough momentum to get users to stick will undoubtedly be the beginning of the end for them. Looking forward to the next Google competitor. Eventually, someone will get it right.

I don't know which is more depressing, Google ruthlessly killing off a valuable service, or people being astonished by their doing so.

Person here: Google is effectively dead. The only people still using Google services are the ones who aren't aware of the other choices.

Personally, I think this will happen to Google. They seem to have lost their way.

I don't think this will impact Google too much. Even in the case they get pushed off the top the way MSN, AOL or MySpace did, they are also in the hardware market, not to mention Google has become leading inventor, technology company and also have a massive amount of funds to get back into business somewhere else. They won't just disappear like that.

Google just has to drop them from the index and they will die.

One day Google will collapse under its own crapululence.

this company has no future. Amazon and Google can kill it easily when they want.

At what point will the dev community stop seeing any Google product as fit for purpose? I've personally been bitten with their services getting killed, seemingly at random.

Don't worry, Google will buy them and shut them down too.

Or Google could just leave.

I hope they do.

Good riddance.

Google has a history of killing off products that are actively used by people. The trust is broken at this point. I'm super weary of relying on Google for anything now.

Google isn't really a good example, they love killing off services on a whim. Meta closing down Facebook would be much more... dramatic, shall we say.

Google often kills off the product when they acquire the company.

Yet another reason for me to continue a divorce from Google. I may even leave Gmail at this point. So far, I have switched to Duck Duck Go for searches, switched to Chromium, use NewPipe instead of the YouTube app, and have disabled all Google software on my phone. I will still have to use Docs at my work, but my personal life will be almost free of Google when I get a viable alternative to Chromecast. I just can't continue to support a company that has morphed itself into Ballmer-era Microsoft and actively tries to destroy the web with abominations like AMP.
