It’s going to be super interesting to see what the reaction to this is (if any). Even though they sound like a terrible company, everyone should take note how easy it is for Google, Mozilla, Microsoft, etc. to make them disappear from existence.
The only company even remotely in a position to kill google is google itself. If they mess up badly enough in the eyes of their users then there would be a mass exodus, as long as they keep doing what they're doing now they will outlast all of us.
It's not like they have a choice now, the other choice here is to shut down the company.
That's also why they launched Firefox OS, they hope in the future to depend less on Google.
So long, DDG. Censorship before they even gained enough momentum to get users to stick will undoubtedly be the beginning of the end for them. Looking forward to the next Google competitor. Eventually, someone will get it right.
I don't think this will impact Google too much. Even in the case they get pushed off the top the way MSN, AOL or MySpace did, they are also in the hardware market, not to mention Google has become leading inventor, technology company and also have a massive amount of funds to get back into business somewhere else.
They won't just disappear like that.
At what point will the dev community stop seeing any Google product as fit for purpose? I've personally been bitten with their services getting killed, seemingly at random.
Google has a history of killing off products that are actively used by people. The trust is broken at this point. I'm super weary of relying on Google for anything now.
Yet another reason for me to continue a divorce from Google. I may even leave Gmail at this point. So far, I have switched to Duck Duck Go for searches, switched to Chromium, use NewPipe instead of the YouTube app, and have disabled all Google software on my phone. I will still have to use Docs at my work, but my personal life will be almost free of Google when I get a viable alternative to Chromecast. I just can't continue to support a company that has morphed itself into Ballmer-era Microsoft and actively tries to destroy the web with abominations like AMP.
