uBlock will stop working in Chrome as they got to Manifest v3

sort by: page size:

Once Manifestv3 is rolled-out, Chrome will not support uBlock Origin at all.

Whenever Google pushes out the manifest v3 changes, ad blocking on Chrome will be hobbled. uBlock Origin already stated they are dead on Chrome whenever that happens.

I wouldn't expect Manifest V3 to have any effect until Manifest V2 is actually disabled and ad blockers stop working. Approximately 0% of Chrome users are following technical browser announcements, they won't care until their stuff actually breaks.

Yeah, didn't gorhill already say that uBlock Origin will never be ported to Manifest v3 due to how much he'd have to cripple it?

That means that very soon all Chrome (and Edge) users will no longer have uBlock Origin, and Firefox will be the only way to run it officially.

This could be a pretty decent value prop for Firefox (bigger than the random features Mozilla has been pushing recently IMO)... Although I'm sure the majority of less technical Chrome users will just switch to whatever gimped, Chrome-sanctioned declarativeNetRequest ad-blocking extensions spring up to fill the void.

isn't Google Chrome's Manifest V3 update going to limit effectiveness of uBlock Origin and similar content blockers?

> Privacy Badger + UBlock Origin

The days of uBlock Origin on Google Chrome are numbered. It may not work for Google Chrome when Manifest V3 is implemented (and no recourse provided for uBlock Origin). [1]

P.S: I haven't kept up with the latest developments on this since last year.

Head's up for anyone going down this route: uBlock Origin is going to be gimped when Chrom{e,ium} switches exclusively to Manifest V3.

They still are the fastest and the most secure, and Manifest v3 is faster than uBlock Origin since no javascript code needs to run.

I won't be using Chrome anymore once they implement this since I like my element-hiding rules which I wrote myself, but for the common rabble, Manifest v3 will be an improvement.

uBlock origin is incompatible with the upcoming Manifestv3.

Hasn't the new uBlock for manifest v3 been working?

I imagine you didn't take the time to understand Manifest v3 criticism.

Nobody claims they won't work at all, they'll just be crappier than they are now, which boils down to two reasons: Manifest v3 introduces limits to filter list size + pattern matching isn't as flexible.

And Firefox has stated multiple times so far that they're going to keep current content blocking APIs, meaning that once Manifest v3 rolls out, adblockers will work better than they will on Chromium-based browsers.

uBlock Origin already released a v3-compatible add-on and they call it uBlock Origin Lite for a reason: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/ublock-origin-lite...

Isn't there the issue with manifest v3 crippling ublock and other adblockers? How do those browsers fare? Do they patch chromium?

Speaking of Manifest v3, I really hope all these adblock extensions secretly work together and on the day Manifest v3 is released, they all display a gigantic red-backgrounded warning on startup telling the user Google Chrome has turned evil and suggesting them switching to Firefox or some other browser.

Not even about Ublock.

Do you control your browser? Manifest V2 you can write a plugin to modify the page in pretty much any way. This is used by adblockers but philisophically important because this is no longer possible in V3 in the name of security. Instead chrome mitigated the adblock concern in-particular.

But manifest v2 isn't actually disappearing, it's a chrome web store policy. You can still manually install the crx.

Maybe compare manifest v2 friendly Firefox with uBlock Origin vs eventual Chrome without it :)

You're being disingenuous. With Manifest v3, it is not possible any more to block requests dynamically which has huge implications for the efficacy of ad blocking (example: forget blocking youtube ads). Additionally, you're limited in how many static rules you can have.

Therefore, it's not just about changing the mechanism, the end result is clearly a lot worse. One can say, they crippled ad-blocking which this change. Hopefully, once the millions of people using ublock origin start noticing what's happening, they will move away from Chrome. I already did, ublock origin is worth more to me than any feature Google puts in Chrome.

Google have already given notice that they are killing uBlock Origin. Manifest v3 will eliminate the ability to have your own adblocker. In its place will be the ability for an extensions to provide an interface to a built in functionality that is deliberately gimped.

Adblock addons will be drastically limited in functionality, must bundle the block list with the addon, can't update the list outside of updating the addon, are limited to a fraction of the size of existing block lists.

This will end the arms race in favor of ads vs blockers by ensuring that ad blockers can't win while pretending its not ending adblocking.

This is dumb. Manifest v3 is better than v2. For security, privacy, efficiency, reliability, etc. uBlock origin will work just fine, and be a hell of a lot more efficient using v3.

Doubt it - with manifest V3, most of the adverts will still be blocked. I expect more are getting through with Chrome already because of CName cloaking and uBO not being able to uncloak on Chrome.
