Taiwan isn't the threat. China annexing (or otherwise disrupting) Taiwan is.

To clarify, the "threat" in the title refers to China, not Taiwan who is the one feeling threatened.

Taiwan is safe, except the threat of Chinese invasion.

The part where anyone thinks it's a credible threat? I honestly thought that went without saying.

You really think China's 5 seconds away from a bloody invasion? China is Taiwan's largest trading partner. Everyone's getting rich, in both countries.

Taiwan is and will remain independent, everyone knows this, China doesn't care.

The US isn’t threatening to invade Taiwan. China is.

China is not going to invade Taiwan militarily and they don’t need to. They can gradually encircle them with alliances with their neighbors and dominate them economically until they’re forced to unify with them.

Stop fearmongering. There is no visible Chinese military build up near Taiwan. Furthermore, China can't just waltz into Taiwan as it is seperated by sea.

Taiwan is right across the border from China. At any point, they can invade and take over.

the only actual threat i see is its claims on the south china sea.

the rest of what china is doing is consistent -> "mind your own business".

yes. maybe somebody should clear up whether taiwan is part of china or vice versa. maybe this is like south china sea too. they think because they've been using it like their backyard pool for 4000 yrs its actually theirs.

but it certainly didn't do syria, libya, iraq, afghanistan, crimea.

China regularly threatens to invade Taiwan. If there’s anyone that needs to tone things down it’s China.

Let's be real here: no one thinks that Taiwan is in any capacity to invade and take China.

The BBC had an interview with Tsai Ing Wen that I think that offers a really good perspective on how Taiwan sees itself on the world stage. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n9d_S_K5X_k

I doubt China will actively invade Taiwan. It goes against the soft power mentality they usually prefer. More than likely, Taiwan will be compromised by Chinese companies, power and influence and its democracy corrupted from within. There's also a strong pro-China and pro-unification movement.

What's to fear? We officially de-recognized Taiwan ages ago and our economy's married to China. China will do whatever they want with Taiwan. China won. We won't even sanction them in any serious way for their genocide they are prosecuting right now.

China is a dictatorship war machine. They don't have to go through all these process. They just do. That's why we need to properly to recognize them as a threat at all levels or Taiwan is a goner

China won't invade Taiwan.

This doesn't make Taiwan less critical for China. They will continue to defend Taiwan as part of China for the foreseeable future.

China doesn't need to invade Taiwan. It just need to create this pretext that they will to prevent Taiwan from becoming a US military base.

Taiwan reminds me of Switzerland. Mountainous terrain with a lot of bunkers and brimming with high end military equipment. It would be really hard to have an invasion force not be noticed by Taiwan. One the shooting started what would stop the Taiwanese from simply lobbing missiles at the heavily populated South of China. I don’t think it’s worth it for China to invade. Constantly threatening it is an interesting foreign policy move against the US.

If nukes start flying, Taiwan is not the target. A far more important opponent is.

China doesn't want to invade. It thinks of Taiwan like a rebellious child who will one day return home. Chinese leaders well understand that invasion would be catastrophic, both on a realistic level of money and loss of life, and more importantly on a symbolic level. It may invade but it does not wish to do so.
