Don't worry, we'll be back to that pretty soon as the cost of throwing anything away has skyrocketed. I recently (as in, two days ago) had to dispose of a bedroom's worth of carpet and padding. It wasn't much material, but it cost me $56.

Just out of curiosity, what sort of answer are you expecting? Your post reads as vaguely accusatory to me - like you're implying that messes are being left intentionally
The kind that keeps growing. Any mess can be cleaned up given time and effort, but if more mess is produced faster than it can be cleaned up, it's a lost cause.
They didn't just "leave it"; Betty literally shook everything off of the picnic blanket and onto the ground before they left. The mess was quite glaring in an otherwise clean area.
