I’ve been there a few times, and it has been generally great. One of the best european countries for food. Along Spain and France. There are bad places everywhere.
Gotta be kidding that a travel show host says 'I don't eat seafood, so in Spain it's omelette all the time' - croquetes, patatas bravas, gazpacho, empanadas, bocadillos, all kinds of tapas, chorizo, migas, cocido... is one of the best countries to eat in Europe. This article is absolute bollocks.
The first time I visited Spain it was as a temporary launch-off point to get somewhere else. I ended up returning a short-time later for a 5 day visit just because the food was so good. I'm pretty much convinced that Spanish pork, cheeses and wine may be the best in the world. Italian cold cuts and French cheese and wine seem like very good efforts in comparison. (okay, I'm think there's a reasonable run-off between wines from Spain, Argentina and Chile for best)
I've spent years since then trying to even emulate the humble jamón bocadillo locally to no success. It's becoming something of an obsession.
I agree this area (mediterranean coast) is one of the best in the world. There are nuances between countries: Italy has arguably the best food, Spain has the best weather, France has a combination of these two, good food and good weather.
In my case I went for Spain because I don't like to feel the cold, ever. I like to be outdoors all year, plus villas cost a fraction of what they cost in France or Italy. You can easily buy a completely new build with a pool in a nice area for 300.000€.
Honestly, they’re all great. Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia, Seville and Bilbao.
I had almost no idea about Spain before I moved to Europe and soon realised that it is a friendly place with amazing reasonably priced food and some of the most amazing artwork. Every new city has these qualities and adds its own stories and beautiful architecture.
Also Spain is to gin and tonic what New York is to pizza and Australia/New Zealand are to coffee: they did not invent it, but they certainly perfected it. a giant fish bowl of gin mare and good tonic water filled with ice and maybe some rosemary for scent.
Canary Islands, Spain, is one of them. Good weather all year round, good internet connection in many places and plenty of flight connections to most important cities in Europe. Affordable prices for housing and food.
