Question for google search users on HN: Do y'all use adblockers? I noticed less of a difference in my one-off searches after I had been using an ad blocker for a while, so I wonder if using an adblocker would be a way for people to transition away from Google.

An ad blocker also removes the ads from Google search though.

I would not expect Google to recommend using an ad blocker. They still want you to be able to see the 'good' ads.

Except if they're blocking ads and the ad blocker actually works (as e.g. uBlock Origin does), they're spending zero time viewing ads.

I never see any Google ads ever. Does the built in adblocker in chrome do that? Or does it... not block ads?

Ad blockers absolutely block the ads at the top and of Google searches, which I specifically sited as useful.

Most ad-blockers don't block Google Search ads! If you want to block them you need to set it up. Most ad-blockers have a Acceptable Ads switch.

Adblock does not block Google ads by default.

blocking google.com with adblocker will make website unresponsive.

Adblock works wonders. I never see Google ads.

I've had the same ad-blocker for ages, and I wasn't receiving any of the YT anti-ad block popups until today. Interestingly, today was when I switched my default search engine in Chrome from Google to Kagi. I have to wonder if there is some kind of evaluation of what Google-y things you use for whether the ad-block popup occurs or not.

Could be just ads that adblocker tries to block. Google is trying new ways all the time to bypass adblockers.

I'm pretty sure Google search results included ads at one point in time. It's been so long since AdBlock Plus came out I don't know if they still do.

I used to be happy with ad blockers but now every site detects them and it's taking me longer to access content and I get to see the ads anyway. Does anyone actually have a good solution?

Yeah, the user experience with current ad blockers is that browsing is way faster then without an adblocker. So anything Google states here is dodgy at best.

Heard of Adblocker much? I didn't have your experience on that page :)

Is it easy to disable adblocking on sites that won't work with adblockers? I like to have the option to disable adblocking in my toolbar. For example, certain bank websites, business websites, etc.

Wow, AdBlock makes Google better. I didn't know this was going on.

So is uBlock origin legit?

I'm not that opposed to ads, but browsing without blocker frequently brings my Computer to a halt.

Doesn't Google offer a way to pay instead of seeing Google ads?

AdBlock is fine except for not blocking google top links and amazon recommendation. It's still blocking everything else, which is a HUGE LOT.
