Dota 2 Reborn is the first game on it, full release was in September 2015. Also Dota 3 was a joke over 7.0.0 patch which had changed all of the core mechanics in the game, but to be fair it had breaked the chains from WC3 map mechanics.

Dota was originally a custom map for the Blizzard game Warcraft III released circa 2005. In 2011 Valve hired the developer of the custom map to make a full standalone game and that became Dota 2. Most players (including me) played the original game before shifting to Dota 2.

DOTA was a WC3 mod but the rest are new games built from the ground up in that established genre.

Valve released a complete engine rewrite for Dota 2 only about 12 months ago, Dota 2 Reborn. They also release major game updates regularly.

Aside from Steam, Valve (the developer) seems to be putting a lot of focus on esports right now. Many of the recent updates to Dota 2 seem to be new features and quality of life improvements for casters and spectators.

The incredible part is, DotA started out as a Warcraft 3 custom map. Hell, there's still a version being maintained by the developers at Valve which largely maintains feature parity with DotA 2.

And DOTA was just a custom Warcraft 3 map.

Dota 2 came out 4 years after LoL

Unless you mean the original DOTA mod for warcraft 3, in which case, yeah I mean why wouldn't you make a full game out of a mod that people loved?

Never heard of Team Fortress 2?

DotA spawned from Starcraft custom map Aeon of Strife using new mechanics from WC3, DotA:Allstars/DOTA 2 is a heavy revamp of the original map. Between WoW and Hearthstone there was WoW TCG, not a video game.

Nitpick: DotA has existed for a while now, nearly 10 years. I remember playing the imbalanced 5.5x versions somewhere around 2004. The modern versions of DotA were the 6x, started in 2005, and they are basically the basis for all modern DotAs (Heroes of Newerth copied heavily the map layout and some of the heroes ; it was pretty successful until DotA 2 came out). DotA 2 is basically an engine overhaul of DotA.

Wasn't Dota a mod? Like, the guy who made it had the intention to make this game (with the help of WC3)

What are you talking about? Firstly Dota 2 started in source 1 and was the first game ported to source 2. It has nothing to do with dota 1? It is made by multiple of the original developers of the warcraft 3 mod, your whole comment does not make a whole lot of sense.

You play DotA and you are claiming that 7.00 was the first major change? You are having a laugh. The game has made massive strides in UX, gameplay and graphics, all while also pushing a professional scene that is now running three multi-million dollar tournaments a year in a scene of nearly-constant tournaments around the game.

Also, Portal 2 was an incredibly polished, fun game.

Maybe they meant Dota 1, which was released in 2005? But that still makes no sense.

I think OP is referring to DotA being a custom map for Warcraft III.

DotA was a well established Warcraft 3 custom game with the same name before Valve copied it.

MOBAs were invented as RTS mods. For example, DOTA 2 is the successor to a Warcraft 3 mod.

Dota 2

For anyone who isn't familiar with Dota's history, the above poster is effectively lying (yes, lying).

Starcraft and Warcraft 3 had what they called "custom maps" that people would play competitively online, with completely different styles of gameplay than the original game.

There were probably thousands of custom maps, but over time "genres" of map became more popular than others.

Dota is one such map, but it became so popular that in 2013 Valve released Dota2. Valve got involved because a few of their employees were fans of the original Dota mod and they wanted to build a modern sequel.

Dota, in terms of esports (aka Dota 2), is less than 10 years old.

Dota as a genre can draw it's LINEAGE back to the original mod from 2003, but that's about it.

No, Heroes of the Storm. DOTA2 was created by Valve :p

Dota 2 has been in continuous development since 2011. The players have been kept quite happy.
