If it's exclusive to Spotify, it's not a podcast anymore. That's fine, but it's just not a podcast, it's a show on Spotify.

Spotify exclusive "podcasts" aren't really podcasts any longer. They're Spotify Exclusive Content calling themselves something that's no longer valid. The same is true of any platform exclusive content.

Don't call it "Podcast" when it's only on Spotify.

> Spotify is trying to be the one that owns it.

If you're interested in pushing back on this, the Podcasting 2.0 community welcomes you. Check out https://podcastindex.org/ for details.

Podcast 2.0 apps have more metadata, chapters, cover art that can change like a slideshow during an episode, etc.

>This could decrease Spotify’s strong position as a music platform and drive a perception that they are becoming a podcast platform.

Spotify isn't without fault for that perception; they've been shoving podcasts down everyone's throats.

> I'm pretty sure that Spotify's API allows access to podcasts outside the official app.

I wouldn't be too sure about this. I know its API (or at least some parts of it) are only available to premium users, because they can't serve ads via third-party integrations.

I don't know if there's an exception for podcasts, but I wouldn't be surprised if your option is either the app or paying to not use the official app.

Putting your podcast on Spotify is completely different than putting your podcast exclusively on Spotify. The former is like creating AMP pages for Google.

No shit, it was always clear that's what's gone happen.

Any podcast that goes exclusive on Spotify is simply a podcast I'm not gone listen to anymore. Luckily some of the podcast that were bought by Spotify are still available normally.

> I dropped my Spotify subscription when it started getting exclusive rights on podcasts

To me, these no longer are podcasts, but are now shows hosted on Spotify. It's not different than any other talk show like Stern or some sportsball talking heads that are exclusive to XM/Sirius/ESPN/etc. It's just their shows don't have a "broadcast schedule". Maybe I'm just being too pedantic

They're funding podcasts on the condition they are Spotify-exclusive. It's not about if you enjoy it or not, but just that you need to use Spotify to listen to a particular podcaast.

Spotify "podcasts" aren't really podcasts at all.

How does that help prevent podcasts going Spotify-exclusive and ceasing to be podcasts?

Unfortunately "Podcast" is becoming synonym with non-music content on Spotify & Co.

I prefer to call them Spodcasts.

If you're exclusive to spotify, you're not really a podcast. You're a spodcast.

> It turns out, that most users who listen to podcasts on Spotify didn't listen to podcasts before.

Probably like music, where a lot of the people who listen on Spotify didn't pay for music before.

Is that true? I've heard multiple podcasters complain that they can't get their shows off of Spotify and ask their audiences not to listen there.

I just refuse to listen to podcast on Spotify that are exclusive because that is against the whole nature of podcasting.

If it's not primarily available on RSS, it's a not a podcast IMO. I prefer to call Spotify exclusives "Spodcasts."

Unfortunately, to Spotify's great delight, the word "podcast" has been successfully embraced, extended, and extinguished. Us technical types have been complicit in it by allowing the word "podcast" to mean audio shows on proprietary platforms that require proprietary players.

This is potentially very bad for podcasting as an open, RSS-driven medium. Welcome to a world of "Spotify exclusive shows" not available on your favourite podcast player.
