You can still keep information.

For how long do you keep the information?

So basically the english 'keep the information'. You can keep it as in not give it to someone else, or keep it as in preserve it. For physical objects this makes no difference.

But you can copy all of the contents to tickets, emails, etc. All is not lost.

And the ability to store and refer to it later.

I keep my important info on paper.

If you have available storage space, keep a backup of information that you find to be useful or important.

At many larger companies, data retention policies that KEEP old data are pretty standard for platforms like this.

Record retention is a reality for many workers no matter how inconvenient reading out of context messages from 7 years ago might be.

What if I still have documents?

This.

And it's not just how it's used today. It's how it can be archived and analyzed 10 years down the road with all the additional information gleaned from you in that time.

? The documents still exist stored safely in my home.

It depends on the information that’s flowing in them. If they are under compliance purview then they might have to retain or at least archive years worth of information.

You can still read the document, which gives me a lot more confidence than if the file just became unavailable.

What kind of info is it for keeping track of then?

Makes sense. These days I just assume everything that can be recorded, is recorded. And kept forever.

You can keep your copies...

Did you get to keep the data as well? Is there a standard practice to this?

At least you know what documents are retained, and in what form, and for how long, and you can plan around that. With all these free services you can only assume the worst.

On the other hand, it can cause issues if it gets forgotten.

I used to explore the steam tunnels under my university. One of our favorite places to get into was this massive room full of forgotten athletic equipment beneath a basketball stadium scheduled to be torn down in a couple years. In the middle of that massive room was an unlocked filing cabinet full of about 3 decades worth of employee information. Addresses, phone numbers, dates of birth, social security numbers, all sorts of goodies.

We obviously never did anything with it but like. Damn.

Doh, good point. You do still have to keep track of those and where they are, (and when they were last backed up to though).
