DHL is many things : DHL Express, DHL Parcel, DHL ground?

Maybe more.

sort by: page size:

Simple Concept Our world-class carriers like DHL® provide the following services: Overnight express, second day, ground, international express, international import, freight, heavy freight, same day, international mail, and ocean.

One could argue that by making DHL into many DHLs, nobody is actually DHL.

This is super insightful. I had no idea about DHLs origins.

uhh, DHL was started by three folks in California.

You are correct DHL is an interesting story. But you left out the most interesting parts.

I live in Germany. I'm pretty sure DHL has more than 25 drivers ...

Particularly ironic inversion since DHL was formed as a US company to fly bills of lading between San Francisco and Honolulu. Initially they used spare capacity in air passengers' baggage so that the bills would arrive ahead of the actual cargo on ships.

Eventually moved upstream into moving the cargo itself.

DHL == Dalsey, Hillblom and Lynn

You are sure it's that way around? Everybody I know is happy when DHL is used (particularly me as a "Packstation" is nearby) and fears for their newly-acquired property when Hermes is the carrier.

Absolutely. Look at shipping and logistics: http://www.dhl.com/en/about_us/logistics_insights/dhl_trend_...

Semi-related: there's a startup in Denmark [0] trying to do this for parcel/freight transportation. I'm not sure how well they're doing, though.

They're a freight-forwarder branding themselves as a software company, competing with the likes of DHL, DSV and 100s of other smaller organisations. In short, they have a very viable business model, but freight forwarding is a cut-throat industry.

> small niche market for high-value, time-sensitive cargoes.

You mean air freight, right?

Maybee not the best name. Everyone here in Germany knows that Hermes is the name of the parcel shipping service thats notorious lose your goods. ;)

WiseTech is offering a similar solution with CargoWise. Among the users are, e.g., DHL.

Later, DHL was formed to fly bills of lading by commercial flights from the West coast ports to Hawaii ahead of the ships arriving. So by the time they arrived the cargo could be offloaded without delay.

Larry Hillblom (the H in DHL) did just exactly that.

ZA Logistics is active and Freight Forwarder, providing services of Sea and Airfreight shipments, offers cost-savings complete Import & Export services, managing of any shipment. http://www.zalogistics.com

Sounds promising. Vaguely terraform like in its application to outside subscription services.

Can’t say I’m a fan of “we call it freight” though. Artefact is a perfectly fine word.

Air freight.
