PHP had Facebook... sorta.

sort by: page size:

Didn't facebook largely reimplement php, though?

facebook was built and grew in php tho

Facebook still uses PHP bro...

But I thought Facebook ran on PHP!

Facebook is about equally PHP and C++ these days.

I love how you mention Facebook, yet Facebook moved away from traditionally PHP and made their own PHP engine and has a lot of native code in C++.

facebook, php ?

now i may be wrong, but isn't Facebook on PHP?

From what I hear facebook is also mostly hack, which is a similar language to php. I believe it is even backwards compatible with php (or at least it used to be).

I know PHP isn't a favorite around here, but it still accounts for (what was recently) a majority of all web apps that use Facebook. We built a more modern implementation, using newer language features, and have big plans for it.

Facebook is a "PHP+mysql" site.

Does facebook still use PHP?

I thought Facebook made their own PHP fork type of language.

Wasn’t a lot of Facebook’s initial implementation php? I seem to recall they moved off it, or wrote a specialized compiler to speed it up.

Could you explain your point? Given it's success, I can't see why PHP wasn't the right tool for Facebook.

What Facebook did amounts to rewriting PHP itself though.

Did facebook drop php? I thought they were really vested in it, with their HipHop VM and whatnot.

They abandoned that a while ago. Facebook now runs on HHVM, which is a JIT-compiler implementation of PHP.

PHP got Facebook up and running, so it has that to its credit. And that's a huge credit.

As a result, Facebook engineers developed things like this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HipHop_for_PHP

Which is an impressive piece of technology, but makes you wonder if Facebook engineers wish their website wasn't written in PHP.
