To be fair, I wouldn't be surprised if a large % of TikTok users watch are on the app for durations equivalent to full length content. I see two, three, even four hours/day spent in the app surprisingly frequently. It's built to be addictive and keep you scrolling.

I believe it. Nowadays, I watch perhaps 1-2 videos a day on Youtube. The addictive endless scrolling of content on Tiktok means I'm spending on average an hour a day.

How many minutes have you spent watching TikTok?

Oh, I've noticed that too. I'll look into TikTok once every couple of weeks and I have a timed lockout set, so I don't endlessly scroll through it. It's certainly incredibly addictive.

Tiktok is for a TV audience and that will bring them massive user numbers.

It can indeed be entertaining from time to time, but consumption of content is extremely passive.

It's not about missing out but you get sucked in and there's no end. I don't use TikTok myself but I've gotten stuck with YouTube Shorts where 45 min easily fly by despite me disliking it. On all other social media platforms you reach the end and see content you read yesterday. On these video platforms it just goes on and on. Short videos are also a very digestable format.

Have you seen someone use tiktok? attention spans are dead

I'm 24 and my iPhone tells me I spend 2 hours on TikTok a day. This is up from about a year and a half ago, when i consumed it exclusively in YouTube compilations.

Their targeting and algorithmic curation is extremely, scary good.

OP here. My guess is the vast majority of TikTok users don't realize how much control they have over its contents, and thus they end up watching mostly attention-grabbing fluff. I think even they will stumble on good meaningful stuff, but it won't be that often. But yes, I've find with effort it's a great resource. The best one for short-form videos that I know of.

I don't use tiktok so forgive me if I'm wrong. But my image of tiktok is that it's basically ~10 second videos. That's basically incomparable to 3-4 minute videos.

Being a TikTok user for a few months I don't know if it is that remarkable. It sees what you like and on which type of videos you spend more time on and then it spams you that type of video until you are bored of it.

tiktok made tv shows and movies unwatchable for me haha. that kind of media is just too slow. only sports at this point. I would say I watch 45m/day of tiktok. 5m here and there.

If you’re an adult watching TikTok 8-10 hours a day that’s on you to fix. When I was at my “peak”, I was watching 2-3 hours a day and that felt like a lot.

If a kid is watching TikTok 8-10 hours a day, that’s on the parents to fix.

This is like the hot dog man meme. “Who’s responsible for this?” Ultimately you are in control of your eyeballs and your time. Stop watching!

Or not. TikTok is awesome. Watch it 8-10 hours a day if you want.

TikTok seems to be more specialized on addictiveness: auto-play unlimited stream of short videos. It's all about removing friction, and TikTok has a good recommendation system.

I think that's only partially true. There's a reason TikTok (and Instagram reels) is extremely popular - it keeps feeding the user content of its choosing.

I wonder what kind of information they could reasonably extract from an average user's TikTok viewing habits?

Imagine a US congressman used TikTok for 90 minutes per week. They don't write any comments just scroll through videos and potentially like/share some videos.

Everyone talks about how scary good the TikTok algorithm is at determining your preferences and sending you laser focused content that you will find interesting and engaging. I am curious how much of that preference is extractable and how that might be valuable for purposes other than delivering viral short-form video.

Try actually using TikTok. For more than a few minutes.

no way, tiktok looks like one of the most addicting platforms i’ve ever seen

Ironically, TikTok allows and encourages such incredibly short form content xD

Note that this is watch time *per active user* lest anyone interprets the title as TikTok having more total active user-time.
