Props to both of you for keeping it civil. Genuinely interesting to see slightly opposing views work out through discussion - something that wouldn't be possible in a write-only scenario...
I found the non-argument that you two just had to be interesting, informative, and entertaining. So don't feel too bad about losing the argumentative-agreement battle - it was great while it lasted!
Just want to say I appreciate the discussion you two are having. Excellent points from the both of you. And it's nice to see a civilized discussion for once.
It was a discussion to me, but I was in a light mood. As studies have shown, it's liberals that don't tolerate alternative viewpoints and here we show that playing out. I know it's going to happen, yet it's still isolating. You guys do a fantastic job.
I have to say, I really love the back and forth between you and the various posters in this thread. Lots of good discussion and points being made, and reasonable compromises being agreed on - or even polite disagreement with thoughtful explanations why.
Your conversation is interesting to read, factually helpful and a good example of civilized discussion that helps to explore the topic you are discussing from different sides.
I side with your point if pressed to put your perspectives on different ends of a scale. But that's not even needed, as you correctly point out.
I love that we can so violently disagree and still approach this from a place of intellectual curiosity and civil discourse. I always appreciate your viewpoint and your perspective.
Thank you for sharing your thoughts in a civil, well-reasoned way. To me, this is a good example of how one can approach a divisive position in a way that has some hope of reaching people who may not agree with you. Much appreciated!
I'd just like to say that I very much appreciated reading both of your responses, and commend you both for firmly but politely and reasonably disagreeing.
Thank the both of you for a thread of informative, intellectual, and highly civil discussion. Would only more of the internet engage in this form of discourse.
Not that I'm adding to the discussion, but I'm very impressed by the tone of this discussion. Even on HN (where I tend to find people more willing to debate (as opposed to argue)) discussions like this tend to get nasty. Cheers to this!
Since no one else has said it yet, thanks for contributing your insight to this discussion. You must have known it would be a hostile audience, and that many wouldn't agree with you, but we benefit from hearing your side and being able to talk about the disagreement. Genuinely, thanks for your bravery and openness in discussing it.
