This!!!! It's easy to get the wrong idea about these companies and that it must be a dream to be working there but stories like these prove exactly the opposite and realistic view.

Why do people work for these companies? Is there no other option? Is the pay great? Is it not clear that they're a bad company before getting hired?

While it would be nice of these companies to out themselves so we can avoid them, it’s usually pretty easy to read between the lines and spot them. Their job descriptions tend to have more red flags than a Chinese parade. I can spot a “you must have no life outside of work” job opening a mile away and avoid it.

I've been at my current employer for 12 years and I have a very narrow tolerance for bullshit so please believe me when I say there are decent employers out there. They are not easy to find, but they exist. I have friends who are in the same boat. And sometimes they are happy enough with their companies that they invite me to apply as well.

In my experience, the people who say that all companies are evil are just too lazy to do the work required to find a decent one. Or are projecting their own insecurities or lack of trustworthiness outward.


We're fortunate enough to be in an industry where it's rare to be really desperate for a job, so I've come to take this kind of thing as a very strong indication that it's the kind of place that would really suck to work at in any case. From that point of view, the earlier all the BS floats to the surface, the better, so you can get on with looking for a good job.

I m one of these, i fill out the form, then i get the memories i had interacting with some of these companies, working at other companies. The Process-Dementia, the hostilitys, the relentless culture of using all things in human interaction as renegotiation ammonition. The relentless pressure, ignoring all social norms and employee health, to complete a task. The shallow friendliness, that ended as soon as your usefullness expired. The internal fights, silos and slightly drunk employees, who hated it there, but couldnt say it, cause big Brother Middle Management is everywhere.

Its considered the "good jobs" in my area, as in well paid enough to own a house, but every time im tempted to apply and see the logos, and the memories come back, i abort these applications.

Some companies are cesspools and its good to remember that and stay away from them. I also warn others to stay away from them. Some people hack these companies and get the easy life there, which is nice, but for people who actually want to work and not interact with such a culture.. not even as customers, if it can be avoided.


Why would anybody work for those companies?

It's predominantly for household names. People know that scoring a job at one of these companies would be a golden ticket.

It's almost like playing the lottery. You know you probably won't win, but it's nice to have a dream.


But that is the thing, I dont think you are right. You picked up companies with good reputation as examples ... they pay well and have good reputation, of course people want to work there.

There are companies with actually bad reputation and they either have problem to find staff or have to pay a lot more while still having issues.


I find many of these companies the opposite of prestigious.

They are shameful.

It's a symptom of how screwed up this world is that people would actually want to work for them and consider it an honor to do so.


Whenever I see absurd stuff like that, I wonder if the companies are really worth working for. What's your opinion? Do they feel worthwhile despite the silliness of the hiring process?

This Jobs story sounds like some myth-building BS that shouldn't ever be applied in the real world.

Most companies I know screw up enough that they aren't lacking for genuine opportunities. That and people can usually smell a fake.

I think about my friends from high school and college who are struggling to find meaningful work when I read things like this. I try to imagine what it be like from their point and it comes off like an entitled prima donna is complaining about being recruited by what one of the coolest companies on earth. Honestly I think as an industry we should try to keep some perspective here.

This is worth reiterating.


I mean it's not that bad, but companies can be very picky.

There is also the issue of job posts that are not real, in the sense that the company isn't actually hiring. Unless maybe a unicorn drops on them I guess.


It is true. What your imaginary businessperson is saying is also true.

It's bullshit jobs all the way down.


While there is still room for other considerations, I was a little more skeptical about the headline until I saw the article's source.

If this had been the usual analysis of one of the large job listing aggregators, then I think more of the arguments made here would come into play, but I give this one slightly more credibility since it's a for-pay and "curated" job site.

So I'll put it in the somewhat-more-interesting category.

Back to the author's points, of course perceptions help frame reality, too.


Maybe they want to work for a company that has these problems.

.... you don't actually believe that do you? There are very few positions in rich, big companies and many many people competing for them. Many people could do those jobs but are unable to get in for a variety of life reasons.
